Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left, framed in a rustic-finished frame, 25" x 20" canvas size, with frame overall 33-1/2" x 28-1/2". A beautifully painted domestic interior with two women seated at a table reading a letter. There are interresting details of the interior surrounding; religious objects on the wall above the curtained window indicating it is night time; a very decorative wall clock behind, flowers on the table along with the envelope and a ladies' shawl. To the left is a wooden cupboard on which hangs a picture of a military man and a pipe. Presumably the narrative records the soldier's family reading a letter with news while he is away on duty. | ||

| 491. Japy Freres Mantle Clock & Garniture Set, French ca. late 19th Century This French garniture has a cream color marble body and bronze mounts and decorations. Porcelain dial with pierced overlay and a hinged glass door; chimes on hour and half-hour. Decorative urn with bronze base and marble bowl rests atop of the timepiece. Front of the clock is embellished with bronze ormolu. Handles on the sides. The movement within the clock is stamped with the name "Japy Freres & Co." included are pendulum and key. Accompanying the clock are two decorative candelabras, fitted for five candles each. The candelabras are decorated in the same style as the clock, with bronze ormolu. Both the clock and candelabras feature paw feet. Trances of gilt on the ormolu suggest the original design featured gilding. The clock measures approx. 18" x 14" x 7" and the candelabras approx. 26" tall. Japy Freres was a well-known clock making company in France in the late 1800's. | ||

Gilt scroll handles are applied to the sides. The base of the clock decorated with gilt ormolu and hand decorated porcelain plaques and rests on scroll feet. | 328. Directoire Skeletonized Clock (French, ca. 1795) Elegant 8-day gilt bronze skeleton clock from the French Directoire period in D'ore bronze with a silk suspension. Skeleton clock refers to design where one can see the mechanical movement. The Directoire period was following the French revolution when royal decoration was replaced by classic ornament. Clock is designed in two round levels. Upper gallery bears clock face which stands on four feet. Face is porcelain, crowned with scrolling floral decoration. Pendulum is a starburst featuring a androgynous face in the center. Bottom level has a six petaled flower in center. Measures approx. 13-1/4"H x 5"W. | ||
| 345. An Eli Terry & Sons American Pillar & Scroll Shelf Clock An American Pillar & Scroll shelf clock, made by Eli Terry & Sons, Plymouth, Connecticut, ca. 1825-30. With a pretty walnut veneered case with tapering legs and a scrolling skirt, hinged door with clear glass panel at the top, reverse glass painting on the lower part with a fancy image of a building in a landscape surrounded by a gilt border, with a painted wood face with Arabic numerals and a flower basket at the center and spandrel corner ornaments, the dial approx. 10-1/2" in diameter, with a 30 hour striking movement, and with the original printed papers glued to the inside back. Comes with the original winding key, made in England. The case has two slender columns on the sides, and an architectural pediment surmounted by three brass urn-shaped finials. Overall size is 31-1/2"H x 17-1/4"W x 4-1/2"D. Similar to a clock in the collection of Old Sturbridge Village. | ||
| 346. An Unusual Clock Framed In A Painting An unusual painting timepiece. The painting is a panoramic scene painted on a steel panel with several military companies on an embankment before a river. A beautiful city sprawls beyond. To the left of the composition is a church with and elaborate clock in the central clock tower. The actual clock is concealed behind the panel inside a built-up shadow box frame. No signature was found on the painting, but it appears to be a 19th Century Continental piece of excellent quality. The picture measures 22-1/2" x 32-1/2" and with the gilt beaded frame approx. 30" x 40". The clock has a coiled chime, and comes with a winding key. Lever at the bottom pulls down to reveal the winding mechanisms in the tower-when closed three disks cover the openings. Toggle on left of frame to adjust the chime. Pull cord at bottom. The shadow box creates an enhancing sounding box for the chime. | ||

An Empire Column Clock On An Inlaid Wood Base An Empire column clock in an ebonized wood finish with gilt metal decorations, standing on a separate inlaid wood base with small circular feet, with a silver metal textured face with Roman numerals, the dial surrounded by a 1" wide gilt frame in relief with shells and foliate swirls, the columns with gilt metal capitals and bases with an egg and dart motif on the capitals and a scored and rope motif on the bases, and with applied pierced cast decorations on the top and the bottom front faces with armor surrounded by meandering vines and grapes, the pendulum with shell and floral designs that match the frame around the face with swans at the top. Measures overall 18"H (without the separate base) x 9-1/4"W x 5-1/4"D; the inlaid wood base measures 7-1/2" x 11-3/4" x 3"H. No maker's markings found. | ||

Deco Bronze Mantle Clock, C. 1930's A custom made gilt bronze Deco style mantle clock features a hand painted representation of a calendar scene, April, from "Les Très Riches Heures", (The Book of Hours), the most celebrated illuminated manuscripts of the Late Middle Ages. The majority of the pages were painted by Paul de Limbourg and his brothers (before 1416) for their patron Jean, the Duke of Berry, third son of King Jean II (le Bon), being a member of the powerful Valois family that ruled most of France at this time. Hand coloring on paper with gilt, applied to clock face. Decorative hands feature a fleur-de-lis design and are silver in color. Gold color Deco style numbers. Bun feet and threaded nut on hinged back. No visible markings on the exterior of the clock. Similar clocks have been retailed in vintage Verve (1937-1960) magazine. Works marked "1041", "R" and "A", interior base marked "D". Key included. Measures apprx 10-1/4" H x 6-1/2" W. | ||

| 223. Seth Thomas Ogee or O.G. Case Clock, Circa 1842 -
1845 A lovely ogee shelf clock with an off-white face with floral decorations in each corner over a reverse painted scene on glass depiction an impressive residence on a small lake. Early features of dial include tapered numerals 3, 4 and 8 and small dots for minute marks and small winding holes. The movement is marked "S. Thomas Plymouth, Conn., USA". Affixed to the interior is a certificate reading "Brass Clocks, made and sold by Seth Tomas, Plymouth Hollow, Conn., warranted good" followed by directions for use. The label also indicates it was printed by Elihu Geer, Hartford, Connecticut, no address given. This dates it to 1842 - 1845. Apprx 26" H x 15-1/2" W x 4-1/2" D. |
