SIGNED SUSAN KLIEWER BRONZE "GERONIMO"SIGNED SUSAN KLIEWER BRONZE "GERONIMO" (2005)Susan Kliewer (American, b. 1940). "Geronimo" bronze, 2005. Edition 25 of 45. Signed and numbered on back of terrain below the horse and rider. A magnificent limited edition cast bronze sculpture of Geronimo, the legendary Apache leader, by Susan Kliewer, one of the Southwest's most acclaimed sculptors. Kliewer presents Geronimo on horseback, dynamically turning backward to gaze behind him while holding the reins of his galloping steed in one hand and an intimidating rifle in the other. The finely modeled and colorful patinated details of Geronimo's clothing and accoutrements, the horse's mane, coat, and bridle as well as the flowering cactus and desert plants are quite impressive. Kliewer also meticulously rendered with craggy terrain below with prickly cactus and uneven ground. What's more, the statue is mounted on a tiered wooden pedestal that rotates so that one may admire it from all angles. Size: 15.5" W x 17.25" H (39.4 cm x 43.8 cm); 19" H (48.3 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece was acquired from the Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona and was accompanied by the following contextual description, "A famed Apache Medicine Man, warrior, seer, and spiritual leader, Geronimo has become an American legend. He was single-minded in his determination to preserve his people's land and culture through any means necessary."
A native of Southern California, Susan Kliewer has lived in Arizona for 40 years, with 5 of those years at the Marble Canyon Trading Post adjacent to the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. Kliewer started painting when she was 10 years old and took up sculpture in 1987 after working at a foundry for 10 years. In 1993, Kliewer won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. In addition, she created a life-size fountain that portrays the Sinagua people as well as a fountain of a Hopi Water Maiden in Sedona. In her words, "My work aims to show the common thread that underlies all human experience, and which, I hope, brings us to a greater understanding between peoples."

SIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPESIGNED LEONARD BASKIN MONOTYPE - "GERONIMO" (1992)Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000). "Geronimo" monotype, 1992. Artist's signature, "monotype touched" and title handwritten in pencil beneath image. An impressive hand-colored monotype by legendary artist Leonard Baskin depicting a bust-length portrait of the famous Geronimo - a respected leader, medicine man, and shaman of the Apache people. Leonard Baskin created two series of lithographs that depict 19th century Native Americans, including illustrious individuals such as Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Geronimo. His poignant portraits convey these sitters' noble qualities as well as the despair and loss experienced by these people. This project began when Leonard Baskin was asked to illustrate a handbook for Custer National Park (now called Little Big-Horn National Park). Since Baskin actually detested Custer, he instead opted to create portraits of Native American chiefs and leaders that conveyed their bravery and intelligence like this example. Size of sight view: 23.875" L x 17.875" W (60.6 cm x 45.4 cm) Size of frame: 31.5" L x 25.5" W (80 cm x 64.8 cm)
Leonard Baskin was a creative force for more than 5 decades and worked in a variety of media; however, he is best known for sizeable works on paper like this example. "Geronimo" is rendered in Baskin's characteristically expressive manner and grand scale. It is among Baskin's figurative prints that rivaled the works of Abstract Expressionists during his day, set in a custom frame and hand signed.
Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. His prints included mythological, classical, and biblical scenes as well as portraits and floral studies. Baskin studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. He also founded Gehenna Press which specialized in fine book production and taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts as well as Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1953 until 1974. Baskin's artworks are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vatican Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Tate Gallery in London, and other elite institutions. "Angel of Death" has been collected by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among others (accession numbers 1971.300, 1971.25, and 1961-157-4 respectively). His noted public sculptural commissions include pieces for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial as well as the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baskin also received many prestigious honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He was also honored with numerous retrospective exhibitions at institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Albertina Museum, and the Library of Congress.

THE ARTILLERY AND INDIAN CAVALRY CAMP AT SAN ANTONIO, ATTARD Signed and dated 1878, oil on board, and a companion a pair 'The Infantry Camp at Lazaretto, Malta'(2)each 23cm x 49cm (9in x 19.25in)Note: In 1878 an eight thousand-strong host of British and Indian troops arrived on coast of Malta. Their encampment was vast, the peaks of neat white tents appearing almost to span the horizon. The British government had deployed the troops to defend the Mediterranean ports against a perceived threat from Russia, and Malta proved a strategic stopover point before the troops advanced to occupy Cyprus. The main force arrived in Malta in May 1878, and soon set about preparing the camp and making new roads. The Artillery Camp and Indian Cavalry Camp at San Antonio, Attard portrays the scale of the operation, from the distant aisles of cannons to the troops industriously preparing sandbags and drawing water. Soldiers also engaged with weapons-training and sports, and they enjoyed learning more of Maltese culture and religion. Gianni alludes to engagement with Maltese customs by representing locals sporting the distinctive faldetta in the foreground of The Infantry Camp at Lazaretto, Malta.Girolamo Gianni completed these magnificent panoramas to commemorate the arrival of the garrisons in Malta. Scenes such as these demonstrated the army’s effective operation across exotic locations, and Gianni’s scenes skilfully convey the garrison’s preparedness and anticipation for its next manoeuvre.
