EIGHT-PANEL GILT LACQUER COROMANDEL SCREENA mid-20th c. Chinese eight-panel coromandel screen, black lacquer with gold-leaf palace scene. To the reverse are polychrome tree and flower motifs. Each panel measures 84" x 16", and 7" deep altogether when completely folded up.
Condition
There is some wear to the gold leaf, but overall very good condition.

Condition
There is a considerable amount of wear across the eight panels, including losses and cracking to the lacquer, as well as general grime and staining.

Provenance: Property from the estate of Patricia Moffat Pope, San Francisco, Ca. Patricia married George A. Pope Jr. in 1959 and together they built a Thoroughbred horse racing empire that included 27 stakes winners in the United States and in Europe. Among the many races that they won include the 1962 Kentucky Derby.

Asian beauties engaged in various activities in an outdoor setting adorn the upper section while vignettes featuring pairs of hardstone rabbits decorate the lower section, all enclosed in mother of pearl and inlaid hardstone foliate borders and dividers, with gilt highlights throughout and to the reverse of each panel. Raised on square feet with brass caps. 72" H x 64" W (16" W each panel). Early 20th century.
Condition:
Overall good condition with expected age related wear and minor losses, mostly minor chipping to lacquer edges. Some overpainting noted to black lacquer ground, primarily to the back.

One side is brilliantly carved & painted with a continuous festive court scene in the pavilions & gardens of a large villa. Dignitaries & court figures engaged in various activities, with gardens, trees, and mountains in the distance. The scene is continued on the verso. Upper borders are pierced with a horizontal open panel, and decorated with Dragons amongst a floral, cloud, & vine motif. Each panel measures approx. 83.25'' h x 23'' w.
