Full brown crushed levant morocco, gilt, by Wallis. Condition: restoration to title with a few letters supplied in facsimile, diminishing repairs to upper and lower corners of first five gatherings, minor restoration of corners and a few closed tears from page 83 through to errata leaf; hinges very slightly rubbed.first edition of this great travel and piracy rarity, a posthumous account Sir Francis Drake's third voyage, written by Philip Nichols with assistance from the explorer himself and his nephew, the second Sir Francis Drake. Recounts Drake's famous West-Indies voyage of 1572-73 and his attacks on the isthmus of Panama, targeting the embarkation of the Spanish treasure fleets. April 1573 saw him capture a Spanish pack train heavily laden with freshly mined silver and gold. The attack yielded £20,000, an enormous sum and within a few months Drake returned to Portsmouth.Only four copies of this work have appeared at auction in the last 28 years, most recently the Phelps Stokes - Roebling - Frank Streeter copy selling at Christie's New York, (April 17, 2007, lot 163, $13,000).
