- Rare New Orleans Double-Sided Commercial
Rare New Orleans Double-Sided Commercial Lithography Stone, fourth quarter 19th century and later, one side engraved with various commercial documents including a business card of Dr. Oscar Salomon, Surgeon Dentist, 190 Canal Street, a shipping receipt for Ledoux Co. Ltd., importers and wholesale grocers, 217 South Peters and 214 Tchoupitoulas, patent medicine labels for Vermont's Stock Remedies, F. H. Gruneberg, 14 Conti Street, and Brodie's Astringent Cordial, I. L. Lyons, a receipt for the sale of cotton for S. Gumbel & Co., and a check drawn on the Hibernia National Bank, the other side engraved entirely with a later promotional advertisement for Cafe du Monde coffee, through the Southern Coffee Mills, Ltd., 608 Tchoupitoulas Street, offering a five-piece aluminum cookware set "for only 3 special vouchers from Cafe du Monde coffee and 98c. cash", h. 3", w. 12", l. 10". One side of this stone apparently dates from the turn of the century, given the variable date "189_" on the Ledoux receipt and directory listings for the other businesses. I.L. Lyons, for instance, was Isaac Luria Lyons (1837-1923), a druggist on the corner of Camp and Gravier, and S. Gumbel was the very wealthy Simon Gumbel (1832-1909), commission merchant and cotton factor whose papers are housed at Louisiana State University. The reverse with the amusing Cafe du Monde promotional advertisement was apparently a later economical use of the stone dating from the second quarter of the 20th century, as it contains the telephone number "RA 2605"; the RAymond exchange was in use only from 1928 to 1957.
