- ANDERSON JOHNSON, OUTSIDER ART
ANDERSON JOHNSON, OUTSIDER ART PORTRAITElder Anderson Johnson (American/Virginia, 1915-1998), double portrait of an African-American man and woman. Image is oil on cardboard, 35" x 51", mounted to a black painted cardboard backing, 42-3/4" x 58-3/4". Biography (courtesy the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center): Outsider artist Anderson Johnson, the son of a Lunenberg, Va. county sharecropper, was struck by a vision of angels at the age of 8 and grew up to become a minister. He settled in Newport News, where he adorned his house of worship, The Faith Mission, with folk art murals and paintings, many done on cardboard or other found materials. In 1987, the city purchased and demolished the building housing The Faith Mission as part of an urban renewal project, but removed many of Johnson's murals for a permanent exhibition at the Downing Ross Cultural Arts Center, highlighting his story.
Condition:
Note this painting was made using found materials with existing condition issues, which likely include the tape at the top edge of image (which has been painted over, probably by the artist), the corner loss at lower left edge, and wear, small creases and losses to other outer edges.
