- PAIR OF WROUGHT IRON ANCHORSca. 1790-1820;
PAIR OF WROUGHT IRON ANCHORSca. 1790-1820; this type of anchor with a diamond shaped eye for the wooden stock at the top of a long shank was typical in Nova Scotia and was called a "Grand Banks Anchor". These anchors were recovered from an unknown location in the Chesapeak Bay around 1960. They are two bow anchors of a Schooner-size vessel originating in the Nova Scotia area. It is thought that they may be from the Schooner "St. Lawrence", a part of the British force in the Chesapeak during the War of 1812. The ship was run aground during the Battle at St. Leonard's Creek in 1814 and would have jettisoned heavy anchors at that time. The damaged ship was retrieved and repaired by the British, but the anchors, not being standard Admiralty issue may have been abandoned. The St. Lawrence was previously captured and taken into the British fleet. WIthout knowing where they were found, their past is an interesting conjecture. A sturdy wooden two-wheel dolly goes with the anchors - by slipping it under the joint of the flukes with the shank and lifting the ring at the top of the shank, two people can pull or push the anchors with no trouble. The dolly has cast iron wheels about 8"d. The anchors are 8'7" in length, 55" wide at fluke tips and 14"d ring, estimated at weighing about 600 pounds.

- LARGE MODEL OF THE USS CAMBRIADESCRIPTION:
LARGE MODEL OF THE USS CAMBRIADESCRIPTION: MODEL OF THE USS CAMBRIA (APA-36) DURING THE 1945 OKINAWA CAMPAIGN This full hull, 1/4 scale model of a Bayfield Class attack transport is mounted on two brass pedestal supports and presented in a custom fitted, glazed display case with mahogany baseboard, which is drop-mounted to a matched mahogany display table. Overall dimensions: 60 in. H x 70 1/2 in. L x 19 1/4 in. W The USS Cambria was launched at the Western Pipe and Steel Company shipyard in San Francisco, CA in November 1942 and after she was commissioned in early 1943, Captain C. W. Dean of the US Coast Guard assumed command and she and her Higgins Boats were all manned by Coast Guard personnel through her service in the Pacific Theatre until the end of the war. During the early 1944 invasion of the Marshall Islands, she served as flagship for Majuro Attack Group during the landings. After overhaul at San Francisco and refresher training at Pearl Harbor, Cambria left 30 May 1944 for the Marianas invasion, again serving as flagship of an attack group. She took part in the assault on Saipan in June-July, then led the invasion of Tinian (24 July-1 August). Embarking Army troops and equipment at Honolulu, Cambria joined the Southern Attack Group for the invasion of the Philippines. On 20 October she landed troops at Dulag, Leyte, in the first assault wave, then remained off Leyte as a casualty evacuation ship.Cambria lifted reinforcements from Oro Bay, New Guinea, to the Leyte area, then returned to New Guinea for rehearsal landings at Huon Gulf. She landed troops at Lingayen Gulf during the invasion landings on 10 January 1945, and after a reinforcement mission, got underway for Tulagi to train for the invasion of Okinawa. Cambria staged at Ulithi, then put her troops ashore at Okinawa on 1 April 1945. This highly-detailed, scale model was commissioned by Marine Bank of North America (MBNA) for its corporate art collection, where it was displayed in the office of Senior Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, General Charles C. Krulak (retired Commandant of the US Marine Corps, 1995-1999). The model honored the WWII service of his father, Lt. General Victor H. Krulak (also a former Marine Commandant), who commanded a Marine task force during the amphibious invasion of Okinawa in 1945 and for which USS Cambria served as his flagship. Victor Krulak was also seminal in developing both Marine Corps amphibious doctrine prior to- and during the war, as well as playing a seminal role in the initial design of the Higgins landing craft. Authentic research was provided to Master Modeler Stephen W. Henninger from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, National Archives, Maps and Plans Division, and the U.S. Maritime Commission. This ship is painted in the splinter camouflage pattern she wore during the Okinawa campaign. The model's hull construction was created via hollow-out laminated waterline basswood lifts, with superstructure built-up from a combination of holly, aircraft plywood, and brass. The models includes all essential deck gear, furniture, armament and fittings per this ships design and later modification, e.g. two single 5-inch dual purpose gun mounts, two quad 1.1-inch gun mounts, aft port and starboard, replaced by two single 40mm AA gun mounts, four twin 40mm AA gun mounts, 18 single 20mm AA gun mounts, directors, life rafts, gun tub mounts, radar antennae, railings, ship's boats, anchors, winches, ladders, bitts, davits, funnel, masts, etc., all of brass or Britannia metal modified castings. All elements are authentically painted and camouflaged per naval practice. Originally commissioned by MBNA Bank at a cost of $42,000. This model was donated to the Mars & Neptune Trust by its founding president, James L. Kochan CIRCA: 1940s ORIGIN: England DIMENSIONS: 60 in. H x 70 1/2 in. L x 19 1/4 in. FRANÇOIS GALL (HUNGARIAN/FRENCH 1912-1987) A PAINTING, ...FRANÇOIS GALL (Hungarian/French 1912-1987) A PAINTING, "La Table Rose," MID 20TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, signed L/R, "F. GALL," verso in paint on canvas, "F GALL LA TABLE ROSE;" 19 1/2" x 24", framed 29 1/2" x 33 1/2". Note: The happiest of pink tablecloths anchors this carefree still life. Just beyond the wave of the pink tablecloth is an impressionist landscape; a white footed compote centers the painting with pears, citrus and fruits. A blue and white pitcher holds a bouquet of fresh daisies and daffodils painted with both detail and abstraction. A pair of wine-purple grapes ethereally glisten in the foreground. The space, is cropped and tumbles toward the viewer at a slant, and is framed by the simple white painted table. Cool blues applied with painterly brushstrokes appear in both a denim blue and sky blue, effortlessly filling the quiet spaces in the background. An unusual still life for Francois Gall, this painting has a museum quality and expressly French presence.

- DETAILED MODEL OF THE AMERICAN CLIPPER
DETAILED MODEL OF THE AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIP LIGHTNING, ...Detailed Model of the American Clipper Ship Lightning, mid to late 19 th Century, a very fine model with tacked planked deck and fitted with gamut of equipment and furnishments including anchors, anchor chains, capstans, deck houses, companionway, binnacle and bollards. Rigged with 3 masts and bowsprit with figurehead, spars, standing and running rigging including mat-lines, chain plates, turning blocks and other details. Displayed in a rectangular glass case on a custom-designed and constructed cherry wood frame.
Notes: Renowned for her beauty, grace and speed, the Lightning set the all-time record for a single day's sail, covering 436 nautical miles in 24 hours. Her builder was the famous Donald McKay of Boston, a follower of John Willis Griffiths and his principles of design. When Lightning was built 1854 in Boston, America's clipper boom was waning, but the Australian gold rush was on, and McKay was building ships for James Baines of the Black Ball Line; Baines needed to transport passengers and cargo to Australia. Lightning was powerfully and heavily constructed to handle the heavy seas and storms. She soon began to set records crossing from New York to Liverpool in just under 14 days. In 1854-55, she made the passage from Melbourne to Liverpool in 65 days, circumnavigating the globe in 5 months, 9 days (including 20 days in port). Lightning served a brief stint as a troop ship, ferrying British soldiers from England to India (in 87 days) to fight the Rebellion of 1857. In 1867 she was bought by Thomas Harrison of Liverpool. Fatefully, early 30 October 1869 Lightning caught fire when fully loaded and ready to sail from Greelong, Australia; attempts to control the blaze were unsuccessful, so the decision was taken to scuttle her by cutting holes on the waterline after towing her out to the shoals in Corio Bay, subsequently known as the "Lightning Shoals."
