- FRIDA KAHLO "AUTORRETRATO" MIXED MEDIAFrida
FRIDA KAHLO "AUTORRETRATO" MIXED MEDIAFrida Kahlo (Mexico, 1907 - 1954) unframed watercolor, pastel, & charcoal on paper depicting a portrait of Frida Kahlo and titled "Autorretrato", executed in 1941. Measures 18-1/2" in height with width of 12-1/2" & signed to lower left "Frida Kahlo 1941". All measurements are approximate. Complete with certificate of authenticity & letter of provenance, please see photographs. Provenance: comes from the estate of a prominent Texas collector. Magdalena Carmen Frida Calderon (Frida Kahlo) was born on July 6, 1907 in Mexico City, the daughter of a German Jewish father & a Mexican mother. She lived her adult life in the shadow of her husband, famed muralist & Mexican national hero Diego Rivera whom she had known since childhood. They embarked on their violent courtship following his divorce from his second wife. The were both temperamental & noisy Communists, & she proudly proclaimed that she had never been expelled from the communist party, as Diego was. He was obese, unfaithful, & psychologically abusive, yet Frida retaliated with her own bisexual affairs. Kahlo once called Rivera "the other accident" in her life, and she lamented her inability to possess him completely. A grisly accident occurred when she was a teenager: a streetcar hit the bus in which she was riding and drove a handrail into her abdomen and out her vagina. As a result her pregnancies resulted in miscarriages and abortions. Semi-crippled and in constant pain, she required several ghastly operations and enough liquor to make her a probable alcoholic. She was extremely loyal to her country; she altered her birthdate to coincide wth the start of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, and to her politics; at her cremation a hammer and sickle was draped over the casket. She didn't enjoy a long enough career to make it into the coffee-table books while she she was still alive. In 1939, after Kahlo returned to Mexico & after some success with exhibitions of her work in Paris & New York, she & Rivera divorced. Her health deteriorated, yet she continued to paint. She and Rivera remarried in 1940, but her physical condition worsened. After her death she was transformed from the "wife of Diego Rivera" to the art world's version of Sylvia Plath, in many opinions. The resurrection of Kahlo started in the 1970s, when her work began to generate excitement in the women's liberation movement. But there always has been much controversy about the worth of her work. She was hailed by the Surrealists and unabashedly admired by Picasso; yet in Mexico itself there are many who feel she is over-rated. She is the subject of numerous biographies, exhibitions and documentary films, not to mention souvenir T-shirts, calendars and posters. For women and feminists, especially, she is a heroine who overcame great odds to create an identity for herself in art. She died in 1954.

- 1910S THE CRIGLER & CRIGLER COMPANY
1910S THE CRIGLER & CRIGLER COMPANY TIN BEER TRAYFor your consideration is this 1910s, pre-prohibition The Crigler & Crigler Company tin beer tray. A group of German immigrants settled in Madison County, Virginia, and from there came the Crigler family. Llewellyn N. Crigler was the first Crigler to try his hand at the alcoholic beverage industry. Llewellyn was raised on the family farm and received his education at White Haven Seminary in the Boone County town of Union. Prior to moving to Covington and allegedly joining forces with A. R. Mullins, he was first employed in an unspecified mercantile enterprise in Lawrenceburg and Lexington (1862–1872). He later entered into a partnership with his uncle, Robert L. Crigler, to create the well-known "Crigler & Crigler" firm. The two were described as the "sole proprietors of the Buffalo Springs Distillery in Scott County and the Woodland Distillery in Lexington, KY, and manufacture only the finest sour mash whisky, with annual sales of $300,000." Then, they had 18 workers in their buildings along with three traveling salesmen. Around 1868, the Cincinnati-based Crigler family bought the Buffalo Springs distillery in Scott County, Kentucky. The "Woodland" brand, created for Crigler & Crigler by Headley & Peck at the Woodland Distillery, is also well-known. Between 1917 and 1919, the business stopped operations. The beer tray shows a white colored background and a bronze colored rim encircling the beer tray. The beer tray shows a woman with her check pressed against her horse as they look towards the viewer. To the left of the image it reads, "The Crigler & Crigler Co." in gold lettering, while to the right of the image it reads, "Distillers of Kentucky Whiskies" in gold lettering. The tray shows some wear from its antique age and use throughout the years showing scratches and paint loss in some spots but is in overall good condition. The beer tray measures 15 15/16" in diameter and weighs approx. 1 lb and 4 oz.
- 1950-60 GOETZ BEER ADVERTISING PRINT
1950-60 GOETZ BEER ADVERTISING PRINT BY C. HARGENSFor your consideration is this 1950-60s Goetz Beer advertising print titled, "The First Run of the Pony Express" done by Charles Hargens. The Goetz Brewing Company, also known as the M.K. Goetz Brewery, was a brewery in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the United States. German immigrant Michael K. Goetz founded the brewery in 1858. It was first called the Western Brewery. Goetz started out modestly, producing beer in a modest wooden structure. As the company grew, Goetz gained a reputation for brewing high-quality beer. After Michael K. Goetz's death in 1884, Anthony F. Goetz became the new owner of the brewery. The brewery expanded and thrived while Anthony was in charge. To honor its founder, the name was formally changed to the M.K. Goetz Brewery in 1893. The brewery faced many difficulties from 1920 to 1933, the time of American Prohibition. Like many other breweries, it was compelled to stop making beer. Producing ice cream and non-alcoholic beverages helped the business survive. Prohibition was ended, and the M.K. Goetz Brewery started brewing again. The brewery rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s thanks to the "Country Club" beer brand, which became well-known in the area. The brewery underwent a significant expansion, and a brand-new, contemporary facility was constructed, in 1964. It increased the production capability and made it possible for the business to sell its goods to a larger market. Unfortunately, the M.K. Goetz Brewery faced financial difficulties in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, the brewery filed for bankruptcy, but it continued operations under new ownership. However, the struggles persisted, and in 2002, the brewery closed its doors for good. The print shows the first ride of the Pony Express with Johnny Fry (1840-1863), a Union soldier, leading the first ride from the stables. The top right of the print reads, "Goetz Beer" in blue lettering and to the right of that it reads, "Certified Straight Brewed" in blue lettering as well. In the bottom right hand corner it shows the artist's signature reading, "Charles Hargens". The print is on a large board and shows good condition overall with the corners of the board being bent and worn. The print shows good condition. The visible print measures 21 3/8" L x 32 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 23 1/2" L x 39 1/2" W.

The passage of time endowed it with the indefinable and cherished personality of great collectables. -H. 5” x 3 ½”, O.L. 35” -$900-$1,200 -The swordstick was a popular fashion accessory for the wealthy during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, it was becoming less socially acceptable to openly carry a sword, but there were still upper-class men routinely trained in swordsmanship who wished to go armed for self-defense. Swords concealed in ladies’ walking sticks and parasols were also not unknown, as it was even less socially acceptable for a lady to carry a sword, or publicly admit that she knew how to use one. -Soon after their introduction, other „gadget canes“ became popular. Instead of a blade, these would hold the tools of one’s trade, compasses, and even flasks for keeping alcohol. There were special swordsticks that had guns installed in the hilt. But the use was unlikely. -In many jurisdictions the ownership, carrying, manufacturing or trading in sword canes is restricted by law.
