COOK Ames Model 1840 "off to war" presentation sword, presented to Union soldier, George B Cook, the sword is inscribed "Presented to 1st Lieutenant George B. Cook, co II, 4th regiment Conn. volunteer, by friends at home, New London (Conn) June, 1861", having a shagreen and wire wrapped handle with a knight head pommel, acanthus leaf stamped collar, on top of two cast eagles with spread wings and shields below, the blade etched on both sides with period designs, including florals, acanthus, and patriotic symbols, as well as an eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch and arrows, below 12 stars and 15 rays, together with the original ornately mounted scabbard. Note: George B. Cook enlisted and was mustered into the first regiment, Connecticut volunteers, heavy artillery on May 22, 1861 as a First Lieutenant, he was promoted to Captain on November 8, 1861; and Major on January 22, 1863, he mustered out on May 4, 1865.
