- ROMAN LIMESTONE CIPPUS W/ MEDICAL GODS
ROMAN LIMESTONE CIPPUS W/ MEDICAL GODS & INSCRIPTION**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Republican period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. An important travertine limestone relief cippus or marker featuring the 3 gods of healing: Hygeia, the goddess of health, next to her brother Telesphorus, the child-god of recovery from illness, with their father, Asclepius the god of medicine, all standing in an archway as though passing through the threshold of the divine and mortal worlds. In contrapposto at the right, the bearded Asclepius wears a simple himation with a bare chest and grasps his serpent-entwined staff known as the asklepian. Hygeia, draped in a voluminous chiton, feeds a large fruit to a snake that wraps around her arms, while the hooded Telesphorus stands between them. Liberal remains of a Latin or Greek inscription are featured above and below the figures. A fabulous example of ancient medical iconography! Size: 8" W x 10.2" H (20.3 cm x 25.9 cm)
In Greek and Roman mythology, Hygeia was one of the children of Asklepios and Epione, and was known as the goddess of health, hygiene, and cleanliness. While her father was associated with healing, Hygeia was associated with preventing illness and maintaining good health. Her name, of course, is the source for what we know of as hygiene. The son of Asclepius and sister of Hygeia, Telephorus was a demi-god of convalescence, who "brought to fulfillment" recuperation from illness or injury. He frequently accompanied his sister, Hygeia, as seen here. He was a dwarf whose head was always covered with a cowl hood or cap. He symbolized recovery from illness, as his name means "the accomplisher" or "bringer of completion" in Greek. Representations of him are found mainly in Anatolia and along the Danube. Telesphorus is assumed to have been a Celtic god in origin, where he would have become associated with the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius, perhaps in Pergamon - an Asclepian cult center - and spread again to the West due to the rise of the Roman Empire, in particular during the 2nd century CE, from the reign of Hadrian, after Epidaurus, the main center of the cult of Asclepius, had adopted him.
Prior to the 2nd century, Romans cremated their dead; around that time, inspired by the Greek and Etruscan practice of using sarcophagi, they began to place their dead in sarcophagi. This trend spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire. In the western part of the Empire, sarcophagi were placed inside a mausoleum against a wall or in a niche, so the only decorated panels were on the front and the short sides. This stele probably came from the grave of a high-status Roman citizen.

- 16TH C. EUROPEAN BOXWOOD RELIEF CARVING,
16TH C. EUROPEAN BOXWOOD RELIEF CARVING, ALLIANCE SCENE...**Originally Listed At $2500**
Northern or Western Europe, probably Germany or Italy, Renaissance period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A remarkably intricate boxwood carving depicting courtly scene that appears to be the formation of an alliance between a king, a pope and 2 other royals. The four men stand atop a classical portico surrounded by soldiers and horsemen with castellated buildings in the background. The architecture is elaborately adorned with Corinthian capitals, archways, maskettes, and reliefs of floral motifs. The pope and king shake hands in agreement as the 2 other figures observe, all are draped in rich robes. A knight's helmet rests on the column's base to the left, as a dog runs up the steps to the right. A label on the verso indicates that this may represent the formation of the Holy League of 1495 or the League of Venice, an alliance between many European leaders against Charles VIII of France. The signature "A.V." is carved into one of the steps. Size of carving: 6.3" W x 4.3" H (16 cm x 10.9 cm); of frame: 10.8" W x 8.5" H (27.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
A label on the verso indicates that this may represent the formation of the Holy League of 1495 or the League of Venice, an alliance between Pope Alexander VI, King Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire, the Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza, King Ferdinand II of Aragon, and the Doge of Venice Agostino Barbarigo against French hegemony in Italy by King Charles VIII of France. Though Venice's ostensible purpose for joining the League was to oppose the Ottoman Empire, its actual objective was French expulsion from Italy. The League was proclaimed on March 1495 and joined by England in 1496. It took place during the First Italian War of 1494 when Charles VIII invaded Italy to enforce his claim on the Neapolitan kingship. After Charles VIII successfully conquered Naples, the League of Venice gathered an army under the condottiero Francesco II Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua and threatened to shut off King Charles's land route back to France. In response, Charles retreated north to Lombardy and the League effectively repelled his army from Naples.

- ROMAN SIDONIAN GLASS FLASK BACCHIC IMAGERY**Originally
ROMAN SIDONIAN GLASS FLASK BACCHIC IMAGERY**Originally Listed At $1500**
Roman, Sidonian, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. Wow! An opulent mold-made glass flask boasting gorgeous relief decoration of Bacchic imagery: a row of wine vessels above a scrolling vine of grapes. Each relief vessel is framed by a pair of columns that support archways above adorning the shoulder. Two of the vessels appear to hold additional bunches of grapes as well. These bunches of grapes would have been an allusion to Bacchus - Greek Dionysus - the infamous god of wine, hence the inclusion of vessels used to serve wine in the above row. A lovely oil or perfume bottle of an attractive form in a creamy hue of beige, quite refined and presenting exquisite detailing! Size: 1.6" Diameter x 2.9" H (4.1 cm x 7.4 cm)
Sidon was a center of art glass production in ancient times. Here are Pliny's words as he described his voyage to Sidon, "From this point on we must go back to the coast and to Phoenicia. There was formerly a town called Crocodilian, and there still is a river of that name … Then comes Cape Carmel … Next are Getta, Geba, and the river Pacida or Belus … Close to this river is Ptolemais … Next Tyre, once an island separated from the mainland by a very deep sea-channel 700 yards wide, but now joined to it by the works constructed by Alexander when besieging the place … but the entire renown of Tyre now consists in a shell-fish and a purple dye! … Next are Zarephath and the city of birds (Ornithon oppidum), and Sidon, the mother-city of Thebes in Boeotia where glass is made." (Pliny, Natural History V.75-76, 77-79 AD).
