CREOLE OR WEST INDIES MAHOGANY PETITECREOLE OR WEST INDIES MAHOGANY PETITE ARMOIRERare Creole or West Indies Mahogany Petite Armoire, early 19th c., cove-molded cornice with reeded band, veneered frieze with reeded banding, flush paneled doors with reeded center stile, scalloped skirt on cabriole banded legs, interior retaining original shelves and belt of drawers, h. 54 1/2 in., w. 43 in., d. 15 1/2 in. Notes: The use of flush panels for the doors and the distinctive "hoof" feet of this armoire exhibit the influence of French cabinetmaking transmitted through the Caribbean into North America. A mahogany armoire and a buffet by Haitian/Philadelphia cabinetmakers Jean Baptiste Laurent and Charles Domballe in the Girard collection share these "island" features. An armoire for the Ursuline Convent with elements similar to those seen in this example is also illustrated in Jessie Poesch, Early Furniture of Louisiana, Louisiana State Museum, p. 41, pl. 9. Ref.: For Laurent Domballe examples see The Stephen Girard Collection, fig 33-34. Another excellent resource is Holden. An American Late Classical Carved WalnutAn American Late Classical Carved Walnut Armoire mid-19th c. New Orleans massive ogee cornice over molded doors shelf interior with medial belt of drawers ogee bracket feet height 93 1/2 in. width 73 in. depth 28 in. Provenance: Barrow/Brandon/Bedgood House at Greenwood Plantation Pinckneyville MS. Note: The massive cornice case construction wide door stiles medial belt of drawers and ogee bracket feet on this armoire are typical within a group of armoires made in New Orleans. A free-man-of-color Jean Rousseau (Haiti/New Orleans active 1810-1837) trained thirty apprentices between 1813 and 1833; notable among them was Dutreuil Barjon (b. 1799). Reference: Moscou. A West Indies Carved Mahogany BuffetA West Indies Carved Mahogany Buffet 19th c. the single board top with rounded corners and molded edge above two drawers and two doors with flush panels fiche hinges one original escutcheon and the original brass lock interior of two shelves the back constructed with large mahogany panel shaped apron with twin lobe return on cabriole legs pegged and tenoned construction throughout height 53 3/4 in. width 61 1/8 in. depth 23 1/2 in. Note: As scholar Jack Holden observes the use of flush panels on the doors of case pieces such as the example here is indicative of cabinet-making traditions in Saint-Malo France and Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) that were transmitted by Haitian émigrés at the turn of the 19th century to different locations in North America including southern Louisiana and Philadelphia. Interestingly the brass box lock and two-lobe return on this buffet are also seen on known Louisiana case pieces notably a mahogany and cypress armoire from Bocage Plantation sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 122 on December 8 2007 now privately held. A two-lobe return also appears on a West Indies mahogany armoire descended in the de la Vergne family of Louisiana and now in the Stromeyer collection. The collection of Philadelphia philanthropist Stephen Girard (1750-1831) includes a mahogany buffet with hinges escutcheons and door panels related to those seen here and was likely made by Saint-Dominguan immigrant cabinet makers Jean-Baptiste Laurent and Charles Domballe. American Rococo Revival Rosewood Armoire,American Rococo Revival Rosewood Armoire, mid-19th century, attributed to the New Orleans warerooms of Prudent Mallard, the bonnet top with a floral urn-carved crest flanked by open carving, the molded cornice trimmed with beaded molding, with smaller-scaled molding of like pattern adorning the frieze and framing the single mirrored door, the canted corners with foliate-carved brackets, the lower section with a drawer over beaded molding, on turned legs, h. 115", w. 56-1/2", d. 25". The present armoire shares the same floral-basket crest design exhibited on a half-tester bed in this sale, and a similar half-tester bed at Lansdowne, Natchez, Mississippi. The en suite Lansdowne armoire is of triple-section form. On occasion, similar double-door and single-door armoires surface in the deep South.

The case does not exhibit any indications that this piece was ever fitted for a crest. Like this one, other Mallard armoires have appeared with no indications of a crest, while nearly identical examples have been fitted with crests. Presumably pieces were equipped with crests to suit the wishes of individual clients, or to create greater harmony with other pieces en suite with them.
