Mallet, December 2018 From the Collection of Diana Edwards Murnaghan, No. 503 Catalogue note: Similar decoration on a coffee-pot is illustrated by David Barker and Pat Halfpenny in "Unearthing Staffordshire" (1990). STAFFORDSHIRE 'TORTOISESHELL' CREAMWARESTAFFORDSHIRE 'TORTOISESHELL' CREAMWARE TEAPOT AND COVER, CIRCA 1755-60 HEIGHT: 4 IN. (10.2 CM.)STAFFORDSHIRE 'TORTOISESHELL' CREAMWARE TEAPOT AND COVER, CIRCA 1755-60, attributed to Thomas Whieldon and Josiah Wedgwood, globular with crabstock handle and spout, the cover with an upright flower finial, each side applied with a large formal rose and scrolling vine, sponged overall in a mottled grey, the leaves and high points picked out in ochre and copper-green oxides, under a lead glaze Dimensions: Height: 4 in. (10.2 cm.) Provenance: The Zeitlin Collection, no. WH41 (label) With M.S. Rau Antiques, New Orleans, March 2000 ($1,600) From the Collection of Diana Edwards Murnaghan, No. 328 Catalogue note: Described by Josiah Wedgwood on a bill dated November 9, 1762 as 'cloudy' or grey tortoise (30-22806). A partnership between Thomas Whieldon and Josiah Wedgwood began in 1754 to produce earthenware and salt-glazed stoneware. Much of their production was experimental and very few pieces exist. See David Barker and Pat Halfpenny, "Unearthing Staffordshire", (1990), p. 41, no. 22, for a teapot of like type. Here noted, "The attribution of this piece is dependent upon the exact match of the sprigged designs with those excavated at Fenton Vivian. The cover, with its upright flower knop with leaves at its base, is particularly distinctive, being one of the most common types of tortoiseshell cover found on the site."
