- BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA PLAQUE WITH EROTIC
BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA PLAQUE WITH EROTIC SCENEAncient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon or Sumer, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A titillating terracotta plaque presenting an erotic scene featuring a nude couple, the male standing behind the female and engaged in lascivious behavior while the woman bends over. Clay plaques like this example were produced in southern Mesopotamia from the second millennium BCE. Their iconography typically illustrated informal activities as well as the private more intimate sides of life. Although scholars have not conclusively determined their exact purpose, most suggest that they may have had magical or religious significance. Size: 3" W x 2.375" H (7.6 cm x 6 cm); 3.25" H (8.3 cm) on included custom stand.

- BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA PORTRAIT PLAQUE
BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA PORTRAIT PLAQUE OF HUMBABAAncient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian Period, ca. 2000 to 1600 BCE. A fine, press-molded terracotta plaque featuring the intimidating countenance of the legendary demon giant Humbaba with thick-lidded eyes, a broad nose, wrinkled jowls that coalesce at the bottom to form the chin, a toothy grimace, and a helmet-like coiffure. In Akkadian mythology, Humbaba or Huwawa was a monstrous demon giant who personified Styx, the river of the dead. Humbaba was also the guardian of the Forest of the Cedars where the other gods resided. Size: 2.8" W x 3.2" H (7.1 cm x 8.1 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The most famous Mesopotamian story - entitled "The Epic of Gilgamesh" - narrates how Gilgamesh and Enkidu set out on an adventure to the Cedar Forest to slay Humbaba. Once they find Humbaba, the giant demon renowned for his terrifying, supernatural radiance, they beat him nearly to death. Humbaba's pleas for mercy were almost granted, however Enkidu convinces Gilgamesh to finally kill the beast and achieve global fame for the rest of time; subsequently, Gilgamesh acquiesces to his friend's suggestion and beheads the dreaded monster. The severed head of Humbaba was then affixed to a cedar door and sent to the temple of Enlil, king of the gods. This literary detail may explain the abundance of clay plaques depicting Humbaba's wrinkled and terrifying face as they were perhaps primarily used as charms against evil and may have been hung on entrances to homes or businesses.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

- 3 BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA CUNEIFORM TABLET
3 BABYLONIAN TERRACOTTA CUNEIFORM TABLET FRAGMENTSAncient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian Period, ca. 2000 to 1600 BC. This is a fine trio of terracotta tablet fragments that are impressed with dozens of characters - the completed tablets would have been covered in narrow horizontal bands of cuneiform, a very early form of writing. The largest has script on both sides - though one face contains considerably more characters, due to abrasions on the verso. The other 2 pieces are flatter and marked on one face, the characters are the most discernable at the center. Cuneiform script is one of the oldest known writing systems in the world, made using a reed as a stylus and scratching wedge-shaped marks onto clay tablets. Early cuneiform was pictographic, but in the 3rd millennium BCE it shifted to the more abstract form. While not translated, these tablets are clear enough for to discern some of the cuneiform, perhaps enough to glean some content from these ancient writings. Size of largest: 2.65" L x 0.75" W x 3" H (6.7 cm x 1.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

ANCIENT BABYLONIAN POTTERY FACE OF HUMBABAAncient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian Period, ca. 2000 to 1600 BCE. Incised horizontal striations adorn the entirety of the deity's fearsome countenance. In Akkadian mythology, Humbaba or Huwawa was a monstrous demon giant who personified Styx, the river of the dead. OLD BABYLONIAN CLAY CUNEIFORM TABLET**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian period, ca. early 2nd millennium BCE. A petite, hand-built clay tablet of a rectangular form bearing 13 lines of inscribed cuneiform text. The gently convex faces enabled the writer to carefully yet firmly press a sharpened stick into the malleable clay to create the intricate characters just before being placed inside of a kiln. Cuneiform tablets like this example give us a glimpse into what those in the past held important or what messages they wished to communicate. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. - MESOPOTAMIAN BRONZE NUDE MALE DWARF,
MESOPOTAMIAN BRONZE NUDE MALE DWARF, EX-CHRISTIE'SAncient Near East, southern Mesopotamia, Babylon, ca. 2000 to 1750 BCE. An intriguing bronze figure of a man resembling a dwarf, depicted nude as he stands on an openwork, quadrilateral plinth and raises his arms to hold a rectangular loop above his head. His hefty body displays a slightly bulging belly, prominent nipples, and a protruding phallus, as spreads apart his thick limbs, bending them at the elbows and knees in a squatting position. His stylized visage is comprised of huge, heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and fleshy lips enveloped by a neatly pointed beard. A helmet-like coiffure crowns his head, carefully incised to display strands of straight hair. Additional incised striations wrap around his waist, delineate his fingers and toes, and add decorative touches to the top loop. Size: 2" W x 3.9" H (5.1 cm x 9.9 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The exact function of early second millennium B.C. openwork bronzes is not known. Cords, straps, or fabric were likely fed through slots in the plaque, and the rollers may have been used as horse trappings, belt buckles, furniture elements, and implements used in the production of textiles."
