- William Belknap Union General & United
William Belknap Union General & United States Secretary of War Bound Volume of Letters 43 items including 28 ALsS from Belknap; 8 ANsS (some signed with initials); and 7 letters to Belknap (most docketed and signed by Belknap). 1869-1870.Originally from the east coast W.W. Belknap was a Democratic politician in Iowa at the start of the Civil War and an early and avid supporter of the Union cause. Volunteering as a Major in the 15th Iowa Infantry he won laurels for his performance at Shiloh (where he was wounded) Corinth and the Vicksburg Campaign earning promotion to colonel by 1863. Conspicuous again for his gallantry during the Atlanta Campaign he was given command of a Brigade in the 17th Corps earning a promotion to Brevet Major General in command of 17th Corps during Sherman's March to the Sea and through the Carolinas. After the war the much-decorated Belknap returned to Iowa to work as a collector of internal revenue but when his old comrade Ulysses Grant tapped him to become Secretary of War in 1869 Belknap moved to Washington. His tenure would not be happy. Swept up in the scandals that plagued the Grant administration in March 1876 Belknap was implicated in accepting $24 000 in bribes though whether he or his wife was the guilty party remains unclear. Although impeached by unanimous vote of the Senate he resigned before he was tried and was acquitted when the number of guilty votes fell short of the two thirds majority required. This collection of letters from and to Belknap largely with H.L. Morrill of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service is focused primarily on settling tax accounts (many relating to properties in Iowa) and insurance matters. Many of Belknap's letters are written on War Department stationery while Secretary of War but more than that the collection has a certain poignancy considering that it concerns Belknap's finances at the time when the official corruption of which he was accused began. Although there is no obvious direct connection between the tax and insurance issues represented in this collection and his corruption it is good remember the phrase follow the money to see where it leads.A scarce and highly desirable autograph of a renowned Union general whose career ended in scandal and shame: 28 letters bearing variations on his signature. The letters were tipped onto stubs in a letterbook not affecting the text and there is some soiling on a few letters but good condition having been preserved in a book.
