Moche Fineline Pottery Vessel w/ Monkeys & Ceremony, TL: Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A rare and exceptional pottery vessel presenting the relief image of a monkey on its shoulder and adorned with an intricately painted image of several monkeys gathering ulluchu, a sacred fruit of the Moche, for 5 humans below them. Boasting hues of burnt sienna, orange, and cream beneath a lustrous burnish, the marvelous jar presents a globular body, a rounded shoulder, a narrow neck, and an annular rim. As monkeys were trained by the Moche to climb trees, pick ulluchu fruit, and place them into the bag before scampering down, here one can see a dozen monkeys climbing through the sinuous and spiraling branches of 3 ulluchu trees, both gathering and eating the sacred fruit. Below them, a person assembles 3 bags of ulluchu and uses a stick to either attempt at knocking more fruits down from the tree or coax his simian helpers. Next to him, a man dressed as a warrior is seated, bearing a worried expression on his face. A tree separates him from a figure in an anthropomorphic costume, possibly of a lizard, preparing a drink from the ulluchu. After the last tree, an ithyphallic figure in elaborate attire lays above a nude, reclined figure. The dressed figure appears to be serving their nude partner an ulluchu fruit. Size: 8" W x 10" H (20. 3 cm x 25. 4 cm). . How does one make sense of this image? One answer: ulluchu. Ulluchu was an essential part of Moche sacrificial ceremonies. First, it was known to be an anticoagulant and, thus, prevented the blood of a human sacrifice from clotting before it was consumed, as the Moche traditionally drank the blood of vanquished warriors, or ceremoniously spread on an altar for a Moche Lord. The masked figure who sits and holds a cup may very well be mixing the victim's blood with ulluchu to prepare it for consumption. Secondly, ulluchu is also known to cause dilation of blood vessels and higher blood pressure and therefore aided in the extraction of sacrificial blood. This indicates that the anthropomorphically dressed figure could be preparing an ulluchu beverage for a victim. Additionally, ulluchu's function as a vasodilator naturally allowed it to produce male erections, which explains the ithyphallic figure and implies that the last 2 figures are likely copulating as a result of ulluchu consumption. . This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase. . . ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) JOB. 1898.
60 3/4x41 inches, 154x104 cm. F. Champenois, Paris.
Condition B+: creases in margins and image; staining in bottom margin; horizontal fold. Framed.
This poster, done two years later in large format, is Mucha's best advertising piece. Other posters, like Cycles Perfecta are also powerful images, but here Mucha provides the viewer with three levels of reading that constantly reinforce the brand. The girl sitting in a circle with brown hair that contrasts with her skin and pink dress is eye-catching in and of itself, as is the big, bold lettering across the top bearing the company's name. But as viewers look more closely at the image, they discover that Mucha has also included the company name in the wallpaper behind the figure, that she is holding a package of the product in her hands and, finally, that her brooch also bears the Job logo. The image and design create a masterpiece of commercial art. Rennert / Weill 51, DFP II 634, Modern Poster 9, Wine Spectator 74, Wember 610, Weill 59, Maitres 1900 p. 18.
Ledger Drawing, likely of Luther Standing Bear (Oglala-Brulé Lakota, 1868-1939)
ca 1885-1895
drawn with graphite pencil on thin unlined paper; depicting a well-dressed man wearing a bow tie, long coat, and trousers; cane in hand; the figure has his hair cut short and under a cap; inscribed upper right corner Standing Bear - Ogalla
8-1/4 x 5-5/8 inches
Provenance:
By descent directly through the family of Captain (later Colonel) Charles A.H. McCauley to the present owner, Col. McAuley's great-grandson.
The man depicted in this drawing is likely Luther Standing Bear (Oglala-Brulé Lakota, 1868-1939). Most known for his writings in the 1930s on Lakota life and commentaries on Federal Indian policy, Standing Bear also traveled and performed with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show (1902-1904) and appeared in Hollywood films (1912-1939). While in Hollywood, he actively fought for accurate portrayals of Native peoples on screen and helped found the Indian Actors Association in 1936.
Standing Bear was born on Rosebud Agency in 1868 and lived there until he was sent to Carlisle Indian Industrial School. After graduating from the inaugural class at Carlisle in 1885, he returned to Rosebud Agency, where he stayed until his move to the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1890/1891.
The dates of Standing Bear’s return to the Rosebud Agency correspond to those of Captain Charles A.H. McCauley's time at Rosebud, as well as the timeline for his acquisition of the Rosebud Agency Ledger Book in Lot 56.
Furthing the identification, are similarities between the man in this drawing and two photographs taken of Luther Standing Bear at Carlisle in 1880 and 1883 by John N. Choate. [Choate, John N.: Luther Standing Bear and Willard Standing Bear, c.1883
(https://carlisleindian.dickinson.edu/images/luther-standing-bear-and-willard-standing-bear-c1883) and Luther Standing Bear, c. 1880 (https://carlisleindian.dickinson.edu/images/luther-standing-bear-c1880)]. Standing Bear is seen, in both images, with a shortened hairstyle and wearing a dark wool coat, trousers, leather shoes, bow tie, and hat. It would be easy to conclude that upon his return to Rosebud a few years later, he would still have been in possession of and wearing similar attire.
Although it cannot be known for certain that the striking figure in the drawing is Luther Standing Bear, the similarities in dress along with the coinciding life events with those of Captain McCauley, make for a compelling argument for the attribution.

Note: William Derby was well known as a copyist, some of his works were engraved and he exhibited at the RA, RBI, OWCS and NWCS.

19th C. Mexican Leather Saddle w/ Silver Pommel: **Originally Listed At $12000**. . North America, Mexico, ca. mid 19th century CE. A gorgeous, ornately tooled leather Charro saddle, bearing the label "J. Warmuth y Co. , Mexico". Engraved overlaid silver conchos give the piece a Classical influence - large bosses bearing a wild bearded face surrounded by grapes that looks like the Greco-Roman figure of Silenus, companion of Dionysus/Bacchus, while the front of the saddle is studded with silver discs bearing lion heads. The top of the horn has a silver disc with concentric circles. Further tiny silver discs with inlaid pearl stud the back of the saddle and the edges of the stirrups. Ornate floral and leaf motifs decorate the rest of the saddle, which also features dangling squared-off stirrups. Size: 13. 5" L x 26" W x 33" H (34. 3 cm x 66 cm x 83. 8 cm); silver ranges in quality from sterling to 50%. . The charro is a traditional Mexican horseman, the result of hundreds of years of blended indigenous and Spanish Colonial culture. After the conquest of Mexico, the Viceroyalty of New Spain prohibited indigenous people from riding or using horses aside from certain elite members of indigenous groups that had allied with the Spanish. However, as cattle became an important part of the Mexican economy, land owners needed horse riders to manage their herds. Farmers hired mestizo cowboys, who had to obey several laws in order to be allowed to ride a horse, including that they had to use a saddle different from that used by the Spanish military. From these first riders, horse riding grew in popularity, especially after the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821). After the war, Mexico was in chaos, and some horsemen began dressing themselves in silver-adorned finery and dressing in the distinctive clothing of "charros" - elite horse riders with large sombreros, tight trousers, and embroidered jackets. Towards the end of the 19th century, President Benito Juarez established a group of mounted police known as the "rurales" to establish order in the countryside, and they drew upon the look and style of the "charros", coming to symbolize national unity, strength, and the ideal of Mexican manhood. Perhaps the most famous charro is General Emiliano Zapata. Today, the charro lives on in the national sport of Mexico, the "charreada" or Mexican rodeo. . . Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection, purchased in Mexico City, Mexico. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #149500 Condition Stand in photograph not included. Wear commensurate with age including some cracking/tearing of the leather, especially in areas where it would natural wear as on the seat and underside. Huge Roman Marble Frieze Hunting Scene, Ex Royal Athena: Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st to 3rd century. A stunning carved marble frieze from a Roman sarcophagus depicting a gripping scene in high relief of five men and their hunting dogs battling a group of lions and bears. Divided into two registers, the top features three men dressed in tunics with two dogs and two lions. The leftmost figure is nearly tripping over a dog whom he looks down at, while he reaches for an object out of the scene. Right of him, a man attempts to save a dog whose tail is being bit by a lion. The figure lunges towards the endangered pup and holds up a club, about to clobber his maned-rival as another trusted canine bites at the beast's belly. Facing right, the third man takes advantage of the distracted lion and attempts to flee the chaos. The lower region depicts a less fortunate scene of two scantily-clad men, one wrestling a ferocious feline and the other combatting a bear, while a lion and bear battle each other in the right corner. Both men on the ground, the wild beasts bite at the faces of their opponents. Little background is provided other than a slender tree in the left corner. The entirety of the vivid narrative is surrounded by an elegant border. Size: 31. 75" W x 22. 25" H (80. 6 cm x 56. 5 cm). . Prior to the 2nd century, Romans cremated their dead; around that time, inspired by the Greek and Etruscan practice of using sarcophagi, they began to place the deceased in sarcophagi. This trend spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire and continued into the Byzantine period. In the western part of the Empire, sarcophagi were placed inside a mausoleum against a wall or in a niche, so the only decorated panels were on the front and the short sides. This panel probably came from the grave of an elite citizen. . . Provenance: ex-private French collection; ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York, USA, acquired December 17, 1987. .
