- This is a copy from the 19th century,
This is a copy from the 19th century, or possibly the early 20th, of George Cruikshank's book of caricatures titled Scraps and Sketches. The title page is undated and is laid down on another, tipped-in page so that the back cannot be read, but the front cover of the full leather binding reads "Scraps and Sketches / by / George Cruikshank / Double Set of Plates / Plain and Coloured / 1828". A printed notation on one of the FFEP reads "MORRELL BINDER" in reference to the bookbindery established by W. T. Morrell in London in 1861. A penciled bibliographic notation on another FFEP states, "24 plates in 2 states: uncoloured & hand coloured / 1928-29-31-32".
Thus, it is unclear exactly how old the book itself is or the coloring on the plates, though the binding must obviously postdate 1861. Reprints of Scraps and Sketches are known, though not in double sets of uncolored and colored plates.
