Michalev, the cook modeled leaning on a wooden barrel, his right hand gesturing, at his feet a black and white cat dines on stolen chicken meat, the oval base edged in gilt, h: 7.5 in. Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling Literature: The composition for this model is based on an 1812 fable written by Ivan Krylov. In the story, the cook fails to take action and stop the thief. He solely lectures the cat as he finishes the meal. The parable being that "words are wasted when it's time for action".

- PAIR OF HISTORIC GRANVILLE OHIO SAMPLERS
PAIR OF HISTORIC GRANVILLE OHIO SAMPLERS AND UNSIGNED SAMPLER. Harriet Warner (Munson) (Woods) and her daughter Martha Mary Munson. Harriet born in Vermont in 1794 worked her sampler in 1808. Her brother Willard was an early resident of Granville. It is not known when Harriet came to Granville but by 1815 she was the second wife of Jeremiah Munson (1780 to 1825) a founder of Granville Ohio. Their daughter Martha Mary born in 1816 made the second sampler in 182[?]. Sixteen-year-old Martha Mary died in 1832 and is buried in the Old Colony Burying Grounds in Granville. Her mother outliving both her only child and husband married Ezekiel S. Woods (1791 to 1880) and died in Newark Ohio in 1884. Both samplers are silk on linen. Harriet Warner's has one set of ABC's a flower eight-point star and a tiny cat by her name date of 1808 and her age. Martha Mary worked several sets of alphabets and a verse ''I love to mark I love to learn and to live well must be my aim'' along with her name and birth date. Mother's: 9''h. 6 3/4''w.; daughter's: 13''h. 11 3/4''w. Together with silk on linen 1830 sampler unsigned with alphabets and numbers floral baskets three-story house and black and white cat looking at a bird perching on a branch. Unframed. 16 1/2''h. 16 1/2''w. Both have even toning.

Unframed. 16 1/2''h. 16 1/2''w. Sold at Garth's Thanksgiving sale 2011 lot 664 with two Ohio samplers. Overall toning and edges show evidence of having once been glued down.

Sheet: 12 9/16 x 17 1/2 in. Matted. Affixed to mat via four plastic framers corner. Slight deckling to all edges. There is a large ''crown'' watermark in paper. There is some soiling in lower left corner margin. There are some areas, within image, where tiny areas of surface level paper is missing. These ''scratched'' areas are present throughout the image. They do seem to be concentrated above the black cat, in the center areas between the cats, and in the surrounding area near the black and white cat by the chair legs.
