The medal was struck by the U.S. mint and sold to raise funds for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. "In Commemoration of the Hundredth Anniversary of American Independence...Act of Congress June 1874...These United Colonies are and of Right Ought to Be Free and Independent States".
