- FROM A MODEL BY FERDINAND PAUTROT
FROM A MODEL BY FERDINAND PAUTROT (FRENCH, 1832-1874), ...from a model by FERDINAND PAUTROT (FRENCH, 1832-1874), A FRENCH PATINATED BRONZE BIRD GROUP, "Partridges and Serpent," incised signature in the bronze, "F. PAUTROT" above "PARIS.1867," on a conforming molded oval plinth centering engraved inscription, "A MR C. BARGMANN SES EMPLOYES SOUVENIR DE RECONNAISSANCE D'AFFECTION DEVOUEE DECEMBRE 1868." NOTE: Ferdinand Pautrot was a French Animalier sculptor who participated in the Salon from 1861-1870 and was known for his refined representations of hunting dogs as well as various species of field and water fowls. His oeuvre, while rather short in years, often exhibits his mastery of portraying animated complex figural group scenes in a balanced composition, without being mundane or constrained. In this elegant Partridges and Serpent group, he successfully captures the shocking mortality of their lives by naturalistic modeling of the figures in recoiling and fleeing positions reacting to the deadly serpent's thrust, going beyond the rocky groundwork and molded plinth boundaries. His attention to fine detailing of the feathers and other features heightens this feeling and can be found throughout his work. Height: 18 3/8" Width: 15 3/8" Depth: 9"
