- CSURI, FRANK. THE CSURI NOTES [ORIGINAL
CSURI, FRANK. THE CSURI NOTES [ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPTS].Csuri, Frank. The Csuri Notes [Original Typescripts]. 1960s. Being the original typewritten transcriptions of Csuri's famous notebooks collecting the unpublished and published magic effects of Dai Vernon, Paul Fox, Charlie Miller (including many entries on Malini's magic), Faucett Ross, Bill Woodfield, and Dr. Jacob Daley. Profusion of hand-drawn illustrations. Approximately 3,000 pages of text, typed rectos only, housed in twelve thick 4to volumes, approximately one third in binders as collected by Csuri, the balance neatly organized in black ring binders. One volume being Csuri's collection of Nelson Hahne cartoons (facsimiles); another his transcription of "The Vernon Touch" columns from Genii. The Daley Notebooks inscribed and signed: "To my good friend Jeff Busby; These are the tricks that were in Daley's notebooks loaned to me by Dai Vernon and subsequently published by Karl Fulves. I hope that you enjoy having this original manuscript. Frank Csuri." Three handwritten pages by Dai Vernon, correcting Csuri's transcription, accompany this volume. A unique set of documents. Should be seen. Csuri (1911 - 94), immigrated to America from Hungary with his family as a child and became a successful night club magician by early adulthood, but spent most of his professional life working as an engineer. He began the project of transcribing (and deciphering, some would say) the tricks and methods of Dai Vernon and Dr. Jacob Daley recorded in their letters and notebooks in the 1960s. Later, he compiled the works of Paul Fox, Faucett Ross, and Charlie Miller in the same way. The resulting record fills thousands of pages, chronicling countless secrets - many of them unpublished - from magic's "inner circle." Only the Daley notes and a portion of the Ross manuscript were released in book form. Copies of these works circulated the magic "underground" for decades and came to be known as the "Csuri Notes." A close friend of Jeff Busby's, he willed the original typescripts of these works - and all of his other magic-related material - to Busby.

- W. GROPPER "THE OPPOSITION" LITHO, SIGNED
W. GROPPER "THE OPPOSITION" LITHO, SIGNED L/RWilliam Gropper (American, 1897-1977), a major painter of Social Realism and illustrator of political cartoons, was born in New York City in 1897. He studied with Robert Henri and George Bellows. He took realistic art and turned it into pungent critique of the ills of modern society. He spoke of the hypocrisy of its leaders, most notably members of the government in Washington. At the same time, his sympathy for the laborer, the displaced person and the underdog gave his art a humanitarian warmth that muffled any propagandistic shrillness. His incisive views are still relevant as we approach the 21st century. His works are in most major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum. Framed, not examined out of frame. Frame size: 16" high, 19 1/4" wide. Tiny spot in upper left margin.

- LOT OF 2 SIGNED & FRAMED LEBO PAINTINGS,
LOT OF 2 SIGNED & FRAMED LEBO PAINTINGS, 2019David Le Batard (Cuban-American, also known as Lebo, b. 1972). "Something to Hope For" and "Born Anew, When We Met You" - two acrylic paintings on plexiglass, 2019. Hand-signed "LEBO" in pigment on lower right and lower left corners respectively. A fascinating pair of pendant paintings by David Le Batard, who is also called Lebo in the art world. Both paintings demonstrate Lebo's innovative take on Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism in which he blends cartoon imagery and texts that suggest narratives with a penchant for bold line and saturated colors. In addition to paintings, Lebo has been widely recognized for his murals and sculptures. For more insight to Lebo's method and philosophy, please read the artist's statement below. Size of sight view: 7.5" L x 7.5" W (19 cm x 19 cm) Size of frame: 16" L x 16" W (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm)
Artist's Statement: "My aim in creating is to explore the purest, most spiritual elements of the arts and sciences (from astronomy to history, from music to physics) and to interpret them through the language of cartoons, giving them a unique and vibrant voice. After all, cartoons are a primordial form of expression that have always combined images in order to tell stories. We have only to think of rock paintings, hieroglyphics or religious iconography for our proof. In reality, even when we look a Picasso's work after 1905, it all becomes very hard-edged yet organic. The very essence of cartooning."
David Le Batard, better known as Lebo, was born to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in Florida. Today, Lebo is among the most respected muralists in Miami and his artwork has been featured internationally, in both private collections and as well as corporations such as Google, Microsoft, Lulu Lemon, Harley Davidson, Audi, Redbull, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Bacardi, Ketel One, and Ferrari.

High Victorian Furniture: The Example of Marsh and Jones ofLeeds Furniture History Society, Journal III, 1967 where a transcribed copy of the Titus Salt order dated 8th August 1866 is seen in Appendix II (the rooms described are those at Baildon Lodge and not Milner Field.)Note: Titus Salt Jr, the youngest son of Sir Titus Salt, married Catherine Crossley in 1866 and immediately moved into the newly vacant Baildon Lodge just outside Bradford, Leeds. While living at Baildon Lodge, the newlywed homemakers commissioned the local firm Marsh & Jones to supply a large number of furnishings from a grand piano to basic toilet wares between 1865-67. Marsh & Jones employed the designer Charles Bevan to provide the Salts with the most modern designs in the reformed gothic style. Along with Bruce Talbert exhibiting a handful of 'medieval' or 'old English' pieces (including the Pericles cabinet) on the Holland & Son stand at the 1867 Paris Exhibition, it is widely accepted Bevan's designs for the Salts marked a turning point in British taste.Between 1871 and 1873 the Salts moved to their partially built country house, Milner Field, with building work continuing around them they took the contents of Baildon Lodge with them. The architect used was Thomas Harris (c.1930-1900), a little-known architect from London. The house too was built in the reformed gothic style with ornamental metalwork by Messrs Richardson, Slade & Co., furniture and panelling by Messrs Marsh & Jones, Stained glass by Messrs Saunders & Co. and cartoons and frescos painted by Frederick Weekes. The final two artists are best known for their collaborations with William Burges.Catherine Salt was an avid musician and gifted singer and regularly sang at the many soirees the couple hosted. The music room suite that included these chairs would have been of great importance to her and so would no doubt have followed her when she left Milner Fields in 1903. Illustrations of the grand piano, duet stool and music cabinet from this commission were published in The Building News of 1st March 1867. Both the piano and the duet stool are in the collection of Lotherton Hall, Leeds. Our chairs feature a distinctive A-frame to their backs which can be seen on the en-suite music cabinet and the sheet music stand on the piano. The duet stool (at Lotherton Hall) retains its original paper label from the makers, this label is hand inscribed with job number 99127. By studying the pieces with direct Salt provenance in the Lotherton Hall collection, we can see the range of job numbers the commission took up. ranging from 99092 (a chamber pot of pedestal form) to 99152 (a reclining chair).
