Note: This print was thought to have been commissioned by the United States Congress for the official celebration of the US Centennial. It depicts the central figure of Liberty/Columbia figure in center, full length seated holding a wreath of laurel leaves and wearing a Phrygian cap, surrounded by flags and stars, and at her feet is a large eagle holding a shield in its claws. The figure is surrounded by a border of 18 oval bust portraits of presidents of the United States from Washington to Grant. Below the eagle in the center bottom of the image are oval bust portraits of the following six Revolutionary War heroes: Israel Putnam, Philip Schuyler, Horatio Gates, Nathaniel Greene, Benjamin Lincoln, and John Sullivan. Above is a birds-eye view of the exposition grounds and small oval vignettes of Independence Hall, Philadelphia (top left), Bunker Hill Monument, Boston (top center) and Faneuil Hall, Boston (top right). Below the center image is text and in the lower left below the date 1776, is a scene of a Revolutionary War battle labeled "The Struggle for Liberty." Below the 1876 date in the lower right are side by side farm and city scenes labeled "Peace and Prosperity."

AFTER CHARLES BAUGNIET (BELGIAN 1814-1886): WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY Hand-colored photogravure on chine appliqué published by Goupil & Cie Paris and M. Knoedler & Co. New York 1879. Note: The photogravure Washington's Birthday was sold in New York through M. Knoedler & Co. which had been founded as Goupil's New York branch in 1848. The date of publication of teh photogravure 1879 rather than 1876 is unexplained. The early provenance of the original painting on which it is based is also unknown. However in 1883 Knoedler sold it to one of the best clients the ''Empire Builder '' James J. Hill. Thereafter the painting hung in the gallery in Hill's house in St. Paul Minnesota. 25 7/8 x 19 7/8 in. (sheet).

Collins to Pennsylvania's Germantown Print Works, circa 1806, in Threads of History (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1979), being a copperplate engraving printed on cotton cloth, the left panel is titled "The Love of Truth Mark the Boy" and shows young George explaining himself as regards the doomed cherry tree of popular legend, additional printed verse underscores Washington's lifelong commitment to honesty come what may; the right panel is titled "The Effect of Principle Behold the Man" above a portrait of Washington after Gilbert Stuart that is flanked by an excerpt from the president's Farewell Address of 1796 on the left and a brief eulogy on the right, below are an American eagle, the British lion, and two peaceful sailing ships beneath the optimistic words "Commercial Union."; the fabric has a colorful quilted backing with two blank squares being signed and dated "Jane West 1840" and "Margaret Davidson 1840" respectively. Presented in a two-sided wooden frame having a figured maple veneer on the front and two brass suspension loops on the top edge.
