It depicts the legendary battle against the roosters of Marcus Valerius Corvus/Corvinus (Marcus Valerius Corvus/Corvinus), as described by the Roman historian Livy, to the center with a wide mustard ground rim depicting Raffaellesco Grotesques. Titled, with maker's hallmark and numbered on the base. 20 1/4" dia. Probably early 20th century.

Pati was born in 1972 during the time Mata Ortiz pottery was starting to be known in the USA. She learned in her childhood (12 years old) from his father Salvador Ortiz. She has participated in Mata Ortiz and Tlaquepaque (Premio Nacional de la Ceramica) annual contests. Mentored by her uncle Macario Ortiz and by her father Salvador Ortiz, assisted by her husband Cruz Santillan, forms truly museum quality pieces from barro mesclado, painting paquimé motiffs. Paty is featured on page 126 of Susan Lowell's book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz . She is also listed in Walter Parks The Miracle of Mata Ortiz . Her work is highly sought after by collectors. Indeed your Mata Ortiz collection is not complete without a Paty Ortiz. For this "Mesclada" (pot with mixed clay colors) - two different types of clay have been worked and kneaded carefully together to produce some of the finest, high contrast marbled-ware in the village.
