- JOHN F KENNEDY PRESIDENTAL PENCIL DOODLEAt
JOHN F KENNEDY PRESIDENTAL PENCIL DOODLEAt the top, JFK has sketched three small sailboats with nine seagulls flying above, which he frequently doodled as congressman, senator, and president. Below, Kennedy has framed the initials TR ? 1906 Peace Prize. He then draws three arrows followed by three interconnected rectangles. Next, the president highlights the words Wilson at Versailles, and, below that, circles the year 1919. The historical significance of Kennedy?s mention of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson cannot be overstated. Roosevelt?s Nobel success in mediating peace which ended the Russo-Japanese War . . . and his notation of Wilson?s Paris Peace Conference triumph at Versailles were obviously on his mind wherever JFK happened to be flying at the moment. Was Kennedy reflecting on ways to alleviate the United States? Cold War relations with the Soviets in Cuba and Berlin?
Provenance: comes from the John Burke Jovich collection. World-renowned US Presidential Historian. JFK's personal secretary during his senatorial and White House years, Evelyn Lincoln, was a dear friend of mine. She frequently reminded Kennedy to pass on his doodles and notes, all unofficial documents, to his friend Congressman Mike Kirwan. Evelyn and her husband Abe (Harold) Lincoln, reviewed every one of JFK's doodles in my Kirwan collection during my visit at their Chevy Chase, MD home back in the early 1990s. She never questioned their authenticity, and her vivid memory of Kennedy scrawling some of the documents brought tears to her eyes. Evelyn was the expert at deciphering the late president's difficult to read handwriting

- PRESIDENT KENNEDY MOST HISTORIC CIVIL
PRESIDENT KENNEDY MOST HISTORIC CIVIL RIGHTS NOTEThis note showcases President John F. Kennedy writing the last names King, Abernathy, and Wilkins on his gold-embossed Aboard Air Force One stationery. JFK was obviously referring to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph Abernathy, who headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Roy Wilkins, president of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Exactly sixty years ago, during the summer of 1963, Kennedy became the first president since Abraham Lincoln to address the civil rights agenda nationwide. The riots in Birmingham with police dogs and fire hoses; George Wallace's face-down with Nicholas Katzenbach over two blacks wishing to enroll at the University of Alabama; the killing of four young black girls at a church bombing in Birmingham; the August 28th Freedom March at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and the eventual assassination of Kennedy himself dominated the 1963 news.
The late Evelyn Lincoln called it one of the most critical doodles ever sketched by John Fitzgerald Kennedy!

- JOHN F KENNEDY SENATE LETTERHEAD PENCIL
JOHN F KENNEDY SENATE LETTERHEAD PENCIL DOODLEA wonderful JFK item as senator in which he lists the five greatest United States senators. Kennedy and his committee worked between 1957 and 1959 to determine who the honored five would be. They ultimately chose Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, Robert A. Taft, and Robert La Follette. On his United States Senate letterhead, Kennedy writes their surnames (see attached scan). JFK had previously won the Pulitzer Prize for his authorship of Profiles in Courage, and was fast becoming a historian in his own right.

- AN IMPORTANT TRANSLATED BYZANTINE MARBLE
AN IMPORTANT TRANSLATED BYZANTINE MARBLE ALTAR TABLETOP...**This is an oversized piece that may require special shipping. Please inquire for a quote prior to bidding.
Holy Land, Late Roman / Early Byzantine Period, ca. mid-5th to 6th century CE. A marvelous marble altar tabletop of an immense scale and a rectangular form. The elegant piece displays a recessed central basin and a raised rim inscribed with Ancient Greek text along one long side and Syriac Aramaic on the other, each flanked by a pair of Greek crosses and written with the periphery serving as the bottom so that a sitter at the table would be able to read the inscription in front of them. The Ancient Greek text reveals that this was an altar table, translating to "Petros with his wife Kosmiane presented [this] as offering with gratitude" and is followed by 2 palm leaves and 3 letters - X, M, and the Greek letter gamma - which serve as a Christogram meaning "Mary is the mother of Christ." The Aramaic Syriac script likely bears a plea to God in return for the offering of the table. Size: 55" L x 31.7" W x 2.1" H (139.7 cm x 80.5 cm x 5.3 cm)
Though minimalist in form, the table boasts a skillfully carved 3-tier border, with the highest tier bearing the inscription and the lowest only slightly elevated from the central basin. An additional inscription of a symbol that combines the letters T, P, O, and Y is featured on the verso, likely intended to represent either the artist's signature, the church for which the table was intended, or the city in which the table was located.
Marble tabletops have been found widely throughout the Roman and Byzantine Empires; however, the vast majority exist as only small fragments. These tabletops were used to celebrate feasts for the dead at grave sites - a commemorative practice known throughout the Roman and early Byzantine worlds - and were often supported by bases and elaborately incised with messages promising salvation.
Prior to the 2nd century, Romans cremated their dead; around that time, inspired by the Greek and Etruscan practice of using sarcophagi, they began to place their dead in sarcophagi. This trend spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire. In the western part of the Empire, sarcophagi were placed inside a mausoleum against a wall or in a niche, so the only decorated panels were on the front and the short sides. This tabletop probably came from the grave of a high-status Roman citizen.
A marble tabletop with an identical Greek inscription is discussed in "Syria Grammata Kai Agalmata" by Hassan Salame-Sarkis in the journal Syria, 66, no. 1/4 (Institut Francais du Proche-Orient, 1989), 320-322.
