MARBLEHEAD ART POTTERY VASE/MAUDE MILNERMARBLEHEAD ART POTTERY VASE/MAUDE MILNER / SARAH TUTTMARBLEHEAD ART POTTERY VASE/MAUDE MILNER / SARAH TUTT, Marblehead, MA, circa 1910, impressed M P clipper ship mark and artists' M T cypher for designer Maude Milner and decorator Sarah Tutt, tapering cylindrical with wide mouth, the side embossed with a band of nasturtium leaves, matte bronze olive green glaze - dia: 6.5 in. Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling Literature: Sarah (nee Main) Tutt, a.k.a. Mrs. Edward D. Tutt (1859 - 1947). Maude Milner (b. 1870, active at Marblehead c. 1905-1911). Maude Milner was born in England in 1870 and came to the United States at the age of three. She studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and became a drawing instructor in North Andover, MA from 1900 - 1905. At Marblehead Pottery from about 1905 - 1911, she became one of the principal decorators. Milner was described by the founder, Dr. Herbert J. Hall, in a 1909 Keramic Studio article as a designer who gave 'valuable service.' Two different signatures have been attributed to Maude Milner. Both signatures include an M and a T suggesting that her designs were executed by Sarah Tutt. Sarah Tutt is associated with the manufactory from its earliest years. In 1908, her mark is recorded by Hall as the letter T and in a 1920 census she is listed as an Art Director at the pottery. She stayed on at the works as a clerk in the shop until its closure in 1936. See the article by Jonathan Clancy and Martin Eidelberg, Marblehead Revisited, The Myth of Hannah Tutt, tworedrose.com.
