She went to Howard at the age of 16 in 1916 and graduated in 1920. She was a member of the Harlem Renaissance and is one of the most decorated female poets of the time. She taught at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore for 20 years. She read her poetry at many different events, including the inauguration of Jimmy Carter in 1977.
