• A Good English "Coromandel" Carved
  A Good English "Coromandel" Carved and Lacquered Cabinet on Stand 19th c. found with good patina and original decoration; the pair of doors opening to a fitted interior on stand with cabriole legs ending in pad feet height 61 in. width 47 1/2 in. depth 20 in. Note: The East India Company cargoes leaving the Coromandel coast (on the southeast of India's modern Tamil Nadu state) from the 17th through the 19th centuries included tea silk wallpaper and lacquer goods all of Chinese origin. This chest is typical of "Coromandel" goods which enriched English households. Forms that were easily packed (screens coffers and cabinets) predominated the lacquer goods imported and were completed with stands and fittings by English cabinet shops as seen here. The fashion for lacquer goods inspired English makers to adopt a version of the technique to adorn chairs secretaries tables and mirrors. Reference: Beard.
