- William Aiken Walker (American/Charleston
William Aiken Walker (American/Charleston 1838-1921 active New Orleans 1876-1905) "Three Cotton Pickers" oil on academy board signed lower right pencil-inscribed "Field" en verso 6 1/8 in. x 12 1/8 in. in a giltwood frame. Provenance: Collection of Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Moore Philadelphia MS; acquired from Robert M. Hicklin Jr. Inc. Spartanburg SC 1987. Note: To be included in John Fowler's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on William Aiken Walker. Note: William Aiken Walker is well known for his depictions of cotton pickers in the fields. Though most often presented as a pair of paintings of single figures one male and one female occasionally Walker portrays a male and female figure together within the same composition. However a comprehensive survey of Walker's cotton scenes indicates that he rarely paints three figures within the same composition as depicted in the work offered here. The couple is shown side by side posed in characteristic Walker fashion. To their left a third figure is featured a woman who is actively picking cotton with her back turned to the viewer. This rare composition places this work amongst the most interesting of Walker's famed cotton scenes.

- William Henry Buck (American/New
William Henry Buck (American/New Orleans 1840-1888) "Picking Cotton Louisiana Plantation Scene" oil on canvas signed lower right counter-signed in pencil on stretcher en verso 12 in. x 20 in. framed. Provenance: Private collection Birmingham Alabama. Descended in the family of William Henry Buck. Note: This depiction of a Louisiana plantation is a rare composition by William Henry Buck. Anchored by a large moss-laden live oak tree in the center of the work this painting of a plantation with a large group of figures is unusual in his oeuvre. Six figures actively pick cotton in the foreground. Buck often incorporates a figure or two into his works but rarely a large group actively engaged in a farming activity. He depicts the Acadian style main house facing the viewer with a long row of cabins and an outbuilding to the left. Along the bayou on the right side of the composition sit a lean to a small boat and other implements used to load the cotton onto boats. Such an expansive active and complete view of a Louisiana plantation is an exciting discovery within the documented work of William Buck.
