- CA. 1896 HORACE S. POLEY LAKOTA OR UTE
CA. 1896 HORACE S. POLEY LAKOTA OR UTE PHOTOGRAPHThis is a fantastic photograph circa 1896 by Horace S. Poley showing a large grouping of Southern Plains or Plains Native American Indians including an Indian Police member. Horace Swartley Poley was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania in 1864 and moved to Colorado in the 1880’s, being a resident of Colorado Springs for sixty-two years. Poley started a commercial photography studio in 1892 and remained active in photography until 1935. H.S. Poley was asked to photograph archaeological expeditions in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and southwest Colorado. In addition, Poley delivered lectures that featured his images in magic lantern shows, and was a member of the Colorado Springs Pioneer Society, the Knights of Pythias, and the National Archaeology Society. This image shows a total of nineteen Indians, possibly from the Ute tribe or Lakota Sioux tribe in a range of regalia including featured and beaded headdress, several hair-pipe bone breast plates, hair-pipe bone choke collars, beaded belts, what appears to be an Otter Mirror Sash which are documented as being from the Lakota Ihoka Badger Society amongst cowboy hats. The images show each male bearing a badge or metal as well as an Indian bearing an Indian Police badge. Truly a fantastic photograph with immense detail. The image is marked in the negative as shown in the bottom left corner which can be made out, “1896 H. S. Poley”. Horace S. Poley photographs are highly collectible with a grouping of smaller examples selling for $5,676.25 (shown w/ bp) at Heritage Auctions in 2011. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures8 7/8” by 7.25”. The card shows some loss to the outside edge, particularly the bottom as well as some cracking, some markings in the field, speck dots or pin dots on each person’s eyes. The back is handwriting in graphite pencil but what it says can not be deciphered. In 1937, the Denver Public Library acquired the Horace Swartley Poley collection. According to Randel Metz, "Horace Swartley Poley created a major collection of photographic images of Native Americans in the southwestern United States. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania in 1864, Poley moved to Colorado in the 1880s and was a resident of Colorado Springs for 62 years. Poley started a commercial photo studio in 1892 and remained an active photographer until 1935. In addition to his photographic work, Poley served as head of the U.S. Postal registry department in Colorado Springs. During summer vacations, Poley served as photographer with archaeological expeditions in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and southwest Colorado. He recorded landscapes, cityscapes, and events in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. Poley was noted for his travelogue lectures employing his images in 'magic lantern' shows." (Randel Metz's article about acclaimed Western photographer Horace Poley - Denver Public Library blog, June 9, 2015) The Iho’ka or Badger Society was one of the Aki’cita eligible societies. Aki’cita (or Akicita) has been often translated as “soldier” or “warrior” but its more accurate implied meaning is more appropriately as “guard” or “police”. These Aki’cita Societies would act as “guards” and watch over the tribe when the tribe moved from one place to another and keep watch for enemy activity when a camp was chosen. Aki’cita also acted as “civil police” to preserve order in the camp and had the right to punish offenders of tribal codes or conduct. Warriors chosen to serve as Aki’cita also had the responsibility to maintain strict control during a Buffalo hunt. The Iho’ka (Ihoka) Badger Society were considered amongst the most extreme warriors of the Aki’cita. They were said to have been started by a man who dreamed of a badger. They often took great risks against seemingly insurmountable odds, emulating the great tenacity found in the behavior of a badger, who would not think twice about going nose to nose with a bear ten times its own size and winning the fight. Among the notable insignia of this society are the society’s crooked lances wrapped in wolf skin, quirts with one serrated edge and otter fur wrist loops along with otter skin yokes which were later adorned with trade mirrors to blind their enemies.

- JOHN SCOTT BRONZE - "EXPLOSION AT GATE
JOHN SCOTT BRONZE - "EXPLOSION AT GATE 7" (2004)John J. Scott (American, 1919-2016). "Explosion at Gate 7" silicon bronze, 2004. Inscribed with the artist's signature and ram symbol as well as the title of the piece and the edition number 2/50 on the front edge of the integral bronze base of the piece. Skillfully and meticulously cast via the lost wax process, "Explosion at Gate 7" is an action-packed piece featuring a bronco rider bolting out the gate by American artist John Scott. Every nuance of horse and rider's motions is captured in this sculpture. The rider's body is practically mid-air with limbs extended and one arm raised to catch the cowboy hat rising above his head. The horse's mane is blowing this way and that, his torso twists dramatically, and the bucking bronco's legs are raised in a jump. Notice that the rider has actually lost his grip on the reins, and Scott has captured the rider's focused intensity with a knitted brow expression. Size: 10.25" L x 10.5" W x 15.125" H (26 cm x 26.7 cm x 38.4 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom stand.
John Scott was an American artist of Scottish heritage. He lived in a log cabin in the woods of Kittredge, Colorado that he built from the ground up and created sculptures and paintings inspired by the wildlife and scenery of Colorado and Wyoming. According to his wife Dorothy, "He was always working and always looking for something to throw himself into completely." Of note, John was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage, learned to play the bag pipes, and wore his Clan Scott tartan kilt. John was also an avid hunter of large game in Colorado and Wyoming as well as British Columbia and Alaska.
Not only did John build his log cabin which he called "Brig-O-Doon" - he also built and operated his own studio and foundry. John created his bronzes via the lost wax process, a method first used by the ancients. His technique involved 24 steps from the creation of the mold to pouring the hot bronze to welding the piece back together to the embellishing with finishing touches. Indeed, John's passion for his chosen profession was boundless; in his words, "Art is a monster that sweeps over me and it seems I never satisfy that creative spirit."
A little note on John Scott's signature ram symbol: Scott was greatly inspired by Charles Marion Russell whose emblem was a buffalo skull symbolizing his strong connection to the American West. Following in Russell's footsteps, Scott chose the ram as his symbol, because the Rocky Mountain bighorn ram with its massive curling horns is the state animal of his beloved Colorado. John Scott loved his homeland and his art has been exhibited throughout the American Southwest and beyond in reputable galleries of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and California.
Provenance: Private John J. Scott Collection, Kittredge, Colorado, USA, acquired from the late John J. Scott

- DELBERT BUCK FOLK ART SCULPTURE - COWBOY
DELBERT BUCK FOLK ART SCULPTURE - COWBOY WITH SADDLE**First Time At Auction**
Delbert Buck (Navajo, b. 1976). Mixed media folk sculpture (cottonwood, acrylic paint, string, and wool) n.d. Signed on underside of base. A lively hand-carved and hand-painted sculpture of a cowboy by self-taught Navajo artist Delbert Buck. Dressed to the nines in colorful Western garb with a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, a buttoned vest layered over a red shirt with stars adorning the sleeves, blue jeans, fringed chaps, and cowboy boots, this cowpoke holds a lasso in one hand and a saddle in the other. A wonderful piece by Delbert Buck whose love of rodeos has inspired fabulous sculptural figures like this handsome cowboy. Size: 5.75" L x 10" W x 19" H (14.6 cm x 25.4 cm x 48.3 cm)
Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, self-taught Navajo folk artist Delbert Buck began creating art at age nine. At age 12, Buck began created sculpture from found objects, and at age 14 he was represented by a gallery.
More about the artist: "Delbert got a young start as a folk artist. He began making sculpture from found objects at age twelve and was represented in a gallery by the time he was fourteen. It was in 1988 that Delbert's father Wilford Buck introduced his son to trader Jack Beasley, of the Four Corners area. With his father handling the boy's art business, Delbert says he didn't even know the value of money until he was in in his teens.
He assembles constructions from found objects and cottonwood limbs, then roughly carves and paints them. His first carvings were the toy guns and the small wooden horses he and his brothers used to make. His inspirations are many.
First there were the comic books that encouraged him to think it possible for a sheep to drive a car. As he aged, he drew on personal experiences, such as his rodeo bull riding, the colorful chaps he wore in rodeos, and his trips in a single engine airplane, to inspire his sculpture.
Delbert's art is humorous and even satiric. His cowgirls and cowboys ride be-speckled skunks, buffaloes, propeller planes, rocking horses, or giraffes, with a goat in chaps and hat, or maybe a monkey or dog, riding behind. A wagon filled with pigs, Dalmatians, or chickens is pulled by a booted pig or an oxen-sized dog. It might take Delbert three to four weeks to complete one of his larger pieces.
All of his carving is by hand. He uses acrylic paint and a wide variety of found materials. Paper, fabric, yarn, and wool all find their way into his work. He even sews the clothing on his figures, as taught by his mother…" (Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian)
Delbert Buck's sculptures have been collected by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, and other esteemed art instititions.
Delbert Buck has modestly stated, "I'm just an ordinary guy. I'm surprised how people have responded and that I can make a living from my carving." The art world has certainly received Buck favorably, and we agree with their assessment wholeheartedly!

"John Joseph James Talleur, died on Nov. 27, 2001, at age 76, in Lawrence, Kansas. He was a retired professor (emeritus) of printmaking at The University of Kansas where he had taught for 40 years. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Institute of Art in Chicago and a master's degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Before his death he arranged to give his printmaking equipment, including his personal presses, to the Lawrence Arts Center that was, at the time, constructing its new building at 940 New Hampshire St. in Lawrence. The Printmaking studio in the Arts Center is named in his honor." "It was with some degree of trepidation that Talleur accepted a teaching job in a small college town in Kansas. He had no idea where Lawrence was when he was called for interview, according to his daughter, Ann Talleur. "He told me that he had to look it up on a map. He arrived by train and was met at the station by a KU professor dressed in a cowboy hat and boots," Ann Talleur said. "This was his first impression of the place."
