FRENCH NAPOLEONIC IMPERIAL CUIRASSIERFRENCH NAPOLEONIC IMPERIAL CUIRASSIER SWORD AND SCABBAR...This is an extremely fine and massive 1813 dated French Cuirassier sword and scabbard, complete with original leather finger loop in the guard. The blade has been polished, so the inscription on the back of the blade is partially obscured, but October 1813 is still legible. This was probably done when the sword passed into Bourbon hands. The scabbard is also bright, so the sword may have continued in use for some time, as was common in French service. The number 200 is stamped on both sides at the ricasso. The number 84 is stamped on the underside of the guard. The brass ferrule is present at the base of the grip. The sword is extremely well balanced for its size. Dimensions: the blade is 37.5 inches long and the sword is 46 inches long overall. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $55.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
Condition:
Excellent overall, with the finger loop being dry. The leather grip is excellent, but it is missing the original wire wrap. The blade is bright and clean. The scabbard is bright, with light freckling of rust. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders. SUPERB 18TH C. FRENCH IRON & BRASS CUIRASSSUPERB 18TH C. FRENCH IRON & BRASS CUIRASS ARMORWestern Europe, France, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A forged-iron cuirass breast and back plate fastened together with brass and leather straps to create nearly impenetrable armor of a hefty form with a thick lower flange. The shoulder straps consist of segmented brass plates with "scales" and perforations on the fastener ends to secure to the large brass rivets on the breast plate. Leather straps are riveted to the lower sides of the back plate, and the interior is lined with a cotton cloth padding attached via a brass wire that runs around the neck and the semicircular arm grooves. This cuirass saw some type of military action- as evidenced by the musket ball sized indentation on the breast plate just above the flange! Despite the battle scars, this is a remarkably well-preserved example of armor used during the Napoleonic era! Size: 13" L x 13" W x 16" H (33 cm x 33 cm x 40.6 cm); 17" H (43.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Fittingly, the French troops that wore the cuirass were known as cuirassiers. Armored calvary had a resurgence under Napoleon Bonaparte; the cuirass was a government issued piece of equipment, and there were severe consequences for the soldier if he lost his armor.

16TH C. SPANISH IRON CUIRASS ARMOR -16TH C. SPANISH IRON CUIRASS ARMOR - CHEST & BACKPLATEWestern Europe, Spain, ca. 16th century CE. A battle-scarred iron cuirass that includes both the chest and black plate with remains of the original leather straps! The peascod-style breastplate bears a central crest that tapers to a protruding point as well as back-folded rims along the neckline and semicircular arm openings. Beneath the breastplate is a curved waist panel with two additional segmented plates and two pairs of partial leather straps that once held additional lames. The convex back plate half would have fit snugly on one's back. Modern leather straps on the shoulders and a belt accompany the armor to illustrate how the armor plates would have been secured while worn. A fine patina has formed across the front and back panels and the front has old scratches and indentations that may have been from fighting. Size: 17.75" L x 15" W (45.1 cm x 38.1 cm); 35" H (88.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Cuirass pieces like this example were some of the most well-known and reputed armor pieces throughout Europe due to its ample protection, interchangeable components, and lightweight design.

ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF TROPAEUM FRAGMENT,ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF TROPAEUM FRAGMENT, CUIRASS & SHIELD...Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2ndto 3rd century CE. An exceptional marble relief fragment of a tropaeum or trophy monument depicting the spoils of war with a muscled cuirass and a large shield bearing the image of an anguiped - a divinity with serpents for legs. Dynamically placed, the cuirass diagonally leans to the right displaying carefully carved abdominal and pectoral muscles, a prominent collar, and shoulder straps adorned with spiraling motifs. A short sleeve projects from the right arm socket, featuring horizontal striations. The shield sits perpendicular to the cuirass, boasting the relief image of an anguiped, perhaps intended to be a monstrous, serpent-footed giant. Size: 14.8" W x 9.6" H (37.6 cm x 24.4 cm); 13.7" H (34.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Standing nude, the intimidating creature presents an athletic physique with a robust torso, a drilled navel, delineated genitalia, and strong legs that lead to coiling and writhing bodies of snakes, each terminating in hissing viper heads. Powerful arms at his sides, the mythological figure holds a scepter in his left hand and a club or weapon of some kind in the other.
Some myths convey the fact that the goddess Gaia was impregnated by the blood of the castrated sky-god Uranus. She subsequently bore a tribe of 100 giants which were customarily depicted as primitives with serpents instead of legs. They were possibly descended from the barbarian tribes of Thrace. The creature depicted on this shield may likely be one of these giants.
In Ancient Greece, the victor in a battle would erect a monument called a tropaion or "trophy" on the battlefield to commemorate their victory. Initially, this consisted of a living tree with lateral branches on which they would hang the armor of their defeated foe and pile the enemies' helmets, cuirasses, and shields at the base. This tradition became known as a tropaeum in Ancient Rome, and soon merged with the Roman triumph so that a trophy could be displayed in the city for all to see, thus more effective for impressing citizens and furthering one's own political career. The symbolic effectiveness of the tropaeum became so well recognized that Romans chose to display sculpted reliefs of them, such as this example, to serve as an enduring record of their victories rather than the fleeting presence of one constructed in the traditional fashion.
Marble statuary, reliefs, and cladding were ubiquitous in the Roman world, as the remains of the preserved cities at Herculaneum and Pompeii demonstrate. Their sculpture was intended to conjure human vitality, and was inspired by the works of Polykleitos, who became the model to which sculptors aspired in Greco-Roman as well as later Western European art. Greco-Roman statuary, unlike that of the other Mediterranean civilizations like Egypt, Persia, etc., celebrated the naturalistic human form. This included representations of their gods, who appear as if living people, dressed as if they are elite citizens. For example, the famous statue of Hades with Cerberus, his three-headed dog, today on display at the Archaeological Museum of Crete, has an extremely realistic quality despite its fantastical nature, down to the details on each dog head. This suggests an intriguing, more personal relationship with the gods rather than the more abstract or magical portrayals of other contemporary societies.
For more examples of Roman marble relief tropaea see: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2002.297 and 2002.568 and Berlin State Museums (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), Antikensammlung, 958a and 958b.

19TH C. INDO-PERSIAN GILT IRON ARMOR19TH C. INDO-PERSIAN GILT IRON ARMOR CHEST + ARM GUARDS...Central Asia, Persia / Northern India, Mughal or Indo-Persian culture, ca. 19th century CE. This is a superb gathering and display of antique iron chahar-ayneh or char-aina cuirass armor with matching bazu or dastana arm guards and the original chainmail, all decorated with lovely details rendered in gold and silver gilt. The cuirass consists of a breast and back plate, and side plates with curved tops for the wearer's arms. The buckles on each plate with the addition of leather straps would have held this piece in place. The arm guards provide full coverage to the outer forearm, and the inside plate is shorter to allow for elbow movement. Attached to the wrists are chainmail shaped like mittens to drape over the hands and thumb for the greatest amount of dexterity and protection. Across the plates and arms guards are very intricate foliate arabesque motifs painted in silver and gold gilt. Size: 19.5" L x 14" W (49.5 cm x 35.6 cm); 23.5" H (59.7 cm) on included custom stand; (breast plate): 12" L x 8.75" W (30.5 cm x 22.2 cm); gold quality: 22.54 to 22.79%
Chahar-ayneh armor was used in Asia, India, and central Asia and originated from the Chinese use of bronze discs as mirrors, which happened to be strong enough to be used as pectoral plates. In the Persian and Mughal period empire these pieces not only physically but spiritually protected the wearer with inscriptions from the Quran inscribed on the surface. The plates on the torso are not form fitting and are usually worn over a hauberk chainmail tunic or with padding for added protection.
