A RARE 1888 DAVID ANDERSEN ENAMELEDA RARE 1888 DAVID ANDERSEN ENAMELED SILVER TINE BOXThe fine and rare covered container in the form of a traditional Norwegian tine box is decorated in raised, champlevé-like enamels of green, white and red within silver wire scrolls against a blue ground. The locking cover with high arching center handle, and the oval body, are trimmed in a repeating loop pattern of yellow and red enamels within silver twisted wire, the interior is softly gilded, the whole is raised on four sabre legs. The underside is stamped with the maker's hallmark, 925, David Andersen and 1888 above a script letter S.The Norwegian tine box (pronounced teen-ah) is a longstanding form of Scandinavian tradition typically crafted from wood. Examples have been recovered from Viking ship wrecks dated to as early as 840 A.D.Measures 5.5 x 7.5 x 3.75 inches.Very good condition with patina, tarnish and darkened gilding. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, losses or areas of heavy wear.Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
