PORTRAIT OF AN 18TH C. FRENCH ROYALIST CONSPIRATOR JUDGE Dean of Judges (Magistrat) under Louis XVI, in typical wig and costume, oil on canvas, unsigned but inscribed upper left "A Debierne Doyen des MDs. Pelletiers et des Juges, et Consuls". He is depicted holding a large open book, spines of books behind read "Memoire et Bills". Unframed, 36 1/4" x 28 3/4", relined and revarnished long ago, overall fine craquelure.
Debierne served as Commissary to the child Louis VII while he was imprisoned in the tower. The Judge was a member of the "Brotherhood of Liberation", formed to save the "Little Capet'' Regent Prince from the Convention of 1795, with fellow Royalist Doisy, Fenouil and Gomin.
