- RARE 16 PAGE WHALING MANUSCRIPT, 1834,extensively
RARE 16 PAGE WHALING MANUSCRIPT, 1834,extensively detailed. Instructions for Captain John Egbert Howell (1813-1840) of the whaling ship Telegraph, Sag Harbor, New York, bound for the Pacific. Signed by his brothers, agents/owners Silas or Stephen and Nathan Howell. "There is one subject to which we would particularly call your attention, to have circumstances as they occur particularly noted on your Log Book owing to the loose manner in which the Book was kept… last voyage. We have not been able to collect anything from the Ins. Office… In reference to the Log Book… no mention especially made when the ship encountered a typhoon and received considerable damage." In another part the captain is advised to "keeping a sharp lookout… among those islands the innumerable shoals and coral reefs." Alexander Starbuck's History of the American Whale Fishery notes under 1834 sailing from Sag Harbor and misspells the captain's name as Howlett, and under remarks "Lost at the Marquesas, 1835; had 2,000 barrels". The letter begins "this being your first voyage as master and the many duties which devolve on you… naturally cause much anxiety among your men and dear friends…" The instructions advise "good government aboard ship," the way to handle disruptive crewmen to avoid flogging and desertions, "trade with the Spaniards", dealing with the English, the food and other supplies aboard, the value of the ship and insurance matters, places best to get resupplied, whaling grounds where other whaling masters have reported great success, selling oil on the way home to "invest your funds in sugar, hides and coffee", etc. John E. Howell died at sea while in command of the ship France. He was killed in an encounter with a sperm whale in the Pacific Ocean on July 23, 1840. His name appears on the Sag Harbor Whalers Memorial.
