Jewett / possessor / 1833'' and stamped ''Prepared by / Dechaux and Parmetier / New York;'' unframed. 17 x 14 in. Note: Jewett a New York native trained at the National Academy of Design. He launched his career as a portrait painter in New York but after the Gold Rush began (1848) he headed to the West Coast and became the first resident professional artist in California.

Attributed to Robert John Curtis (American/South Carolina 1816-1877) A Pendant Pair of Portraits of "Thomas James McMillan (1804-1878)" and "Louisa Rogers Ray McMillan (1812-1855)" oil on canvas unsigned each stamped "Prepared by Edward Dechaux New York" en verso both 34 in. x 27 in. in matching period gilt frames. Please note condition. Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitters. Note: Robert Curtis who is most well known for his portrait of the Seminole Chief Osceola from 1838 (now in the Charleston Museum) painted in the Charleston area during the 1830s. Curtis employs the same background technique here as in his portrait of Osceola; the landscape to Mr. McMillan's right in particular is remarkably similar to the landscape to the right of Osceola. Louisa Rogers Ray McMillan who was born in Sumter County South Carolina to Captain Peter and Mary Ray married Thomas McMillan an immigrant from Scotland. The couple resided in Camden South Carolina until 1834 when they moved to Mobile Alabama. Both are buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Mobile. Their daughter Ellen Marion McMillan married William Elliot Gordon Sr. in 1870 in New Orleans.

Presented in a period possibly original gilt wooden frame. The canvas carries the stencil of its maker Edward Dechaux of New York.The sitter here is likely La Roy Sunderland (1804 - 1885) publisher of the Methodist antislavery periodical ''Zion's Watchman'' from 1835 - 1842. Sunderland's belief system underwent radical changes during the course of his life. An evangelical Christian at first he turned to spiritualism and phrenology before embracing atheism in old age.SS 29.5 x 23.5 in.; DOA 35.5 x 29.5 in.Allover craquelure; slight slack to canvas; paint flake near elbow above frame; black light inspection reveals an old varnish and possible area of touch-up to sitter's jacket by elbow; slight yellowing to varnish; some minor nicks to frame.
