- IMPORTANT 16TH C. HELMET, KING HENRY
IMPORTANT 16TH C. HELMET, KING HENRY VIIIA historically important close helmet, the one piece skull showing a low comb with roped detail, upper visor with eye-slot, plain lower visor and chin guard with roped detail, restoration to lower visor & comb. English, circa 1550. Measuring, 11" high. Provenance: Sotheby's Catalogue dated April 6th 1976, London, page 12, Lot #87 (photos of Sotheby's catalogue included), referencing this helmet as belonging to Sir William Goring, Knight of Burton Sussex, Master of the Horse to King Henry VIII, and Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Edward VI, thence to the Family of Goring of Highden, Sussex and by family descent to the present owner. Note: There is definite evidence that he was killed in the helmet as it underwent hasty repairs so that it could be affixed to a wall behind his tomb. A sword cut does not line up with any corresponding cut in the crudely made bevor so the latter was fashioned after his death. The helmet has remained in the Goring family until it was decided to place it in the hands of Sotheby's auction firm who sold it in 1976 to the present owner.

- JOHN MILLER OIL ON CANVAS "SANTA MARIA
JOHN MILLER OIL ON CANVAS "SANTA MARIA DELLA SALUTE - V...John Miller (British 1931-2002) Oil on Canvas "Santa Maria Della Salute - Venice" , signed lower right John Miller; titled, signed and remarked on reverse of canvas "Santa Maria Della Salute - Venice, John Miller - Painted Spring 2000 - A Memory"; in molded gilt frame
64 in. x 47 in. Framed 76 in. x 60 in.
John Miller (1931-2002) was an English artist born in London who became famous for his idyllic representation of beach scenes in his home county of Cornwall. Most of his paintings were of the West Penwith peninsula and Tresco in the Isles of Scilly.
During the 1970s John Miller emerged as a cultural figurehead within Cornwall. He became well known as a painter of popular, Monet-like Cornish scenes (many of which were cheaply reproduced as prints for the tourist trade), as an art teacher, a television personality, a patron of local charities and an active supporter of the Church of England. He was also responsible for some high profile architectural projects including a reordering of the interior of Newlyn Art Gallery.
At an advanced stage in his career John Miller's artistic style underwent a radical change and by the mid-1990s his work (but not always his name) had become known worldwide as a result of the mass production and distribution of cheap posters, prints and cards with reproductions of his distinctive beach paintings: he produced the first of these in what was to become recognized as his trademark style in 1992. The paintings themselves, which Miller continued to produce in large numbers until his death in 2002, became highly sought after and were only available through selected London galleries at successive annual exhibitions which usually sold out well before their official opening dates.
John Miller was elected to become a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1961. John Miller, a household name in Cornwall since the mid-1970s, is an artist whose work continues to have an extremely high public profile, both in the UK and internationally. In a 2003 survey (for the periodical ' Art Business Today ') of 200 United Kingdom high street gallery owners whose businesses specialized in posters and popular art reproductions, Miller was listed alongside Monet and L.S. Lowry among the 'top-four' best-selling landscape artists and fifth - above Van Gogh (7th), Picasso (8th), and Matisse (10th) - in a list of the current 'top-ten' best-selling deceased artists in all genres. John Miller's work was the subject of academic investigation by a postgraduate student at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England in 2004-2005.

1921 ILLINOIS GRADE 305 POCKET WATCH & GOLD CASEFor your consideration is this 1921 Illinois Grade 305 pocket watch made by the Illinois Watch Company, set in a American Watch Case Company of Toronto 10k gold filled case. John C. Adams and a number of other investors established the Illinois Watch Company in 1870. The Illinois Watch Company, originally known as the Springfield Watch Company, underwent reorganization in 1872 and changed its name. They were among the first American watchmakers to use the Waltham Watch Company's revolutionary interchangeable parts system. This facilitated repairs and enabled more effective production. The "Bunn Special" watch's introduction in 1879 was one significant innovation. The Bunn Special, known for its accuracy and dependability, rose to become one of the most well-known and respected railroad watches. It was produced in a variety of models with various features and grades, and it was given the vice president of the company, Charles H. Bunn, as its name. The Great Depression and the emergence of wristwatches presented difficulties for the Illinois Watch Company. The business made an attempt to enter the wristwatch market but found it difficult to compete with Swiss producers who were able to make more reasonably priced and precise wristwatches. The watch industry was also severely affected by the 1930s economic downturn, which ultimately resulted in the Illinois Watch Company's closure in 1928. The serial number inscribed alongside the movement is numbered, "3950631" indicating it was made in 1921. The pocket watch is a grade 305, 17 jewel, size 16s, model 7 and features a nickel movement finish, a bridge plate and the movement is fitted with a double roller. The watch is not railroad graded. When the factory first opened in 1880, these cases were identified with the Keystone symbol. The gold-filled company run by Hagstoz & Thrope was eventually absorbed by the Keystone Watch Case Company, which resulted in the creation of the Keystone Watch Case Company and the Keystone trademark on all cases. - 1950-60 GOETZ BEER ADVERTISING PRINT
1950-60 GOETZ BEER ADVERTISING PRINT BY C. HARGENSFor your consideration is this 1950-60s Goetz Beer advertising print titled, "The First Run of the Pony Express" done by Charles Hargens. The Goetz Brewing Company, also known as the M.K. Goetz Brewery, was a brewery in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the United States. German immigrant Michael K. Goetz founded the brewery in 1858. It was first called the Western Brewery. Goetz started out modestly, producing beer in a modest wooden structure. As the company grew, Goetz gained a reputation for brewing high-quality beer. After Michael K. Goetz's death in 1884, Anthony F. Goetz became the new owner of the brewery. The brewery expanded and thrived while Anthony was in charge. To honor its founder, the name was formally changed to the M.K. Goetz Brewery in 1893. The brewery faced many difficulties from 1920 to 1933, the time of American Prohibition. Like many other breweries, it was compelled to stop making beer. Producing ice cream and non-alcoholic beverages helped the business survive. Prohibition was ended, and the M.K. Goetz Brewery started brewing again. The brewery rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s thanks to the "Country Club" beer brand, which became well-known in the area. The brewery underwent a significant expansion, and a brand-new, contemporary facility was constructed, in 1964. It increased the production capability and made it possible for the business to sell its goods to a larger market. Unfortunately, the M.K. Goetz Brewery faced financial difficulties in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, the brewery filed for bankruptcy, but it continued operations under new ownership. However, the struggles persisted, and in 2002, the brewery closed its doors for good. The print shows the first ride of the Pony Express with Johnny Fry (1840-1863), a Union soldier, leading the first ride from the stables. The top right of the print reads, "Goetz Beer" in blue lettering and to the right of that it reads, "Certified Straight Brewed" in blue lettering as well. In the bottom right hand corner it shows the artist's signature reading, "Charles Hargens". The print is on a large board and shows good condition overall with the corners of the board being bent and worn. The print shows good condition. The visible print measures 21 3/8" L x 32 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 23 1/2" L x 39 1/2" W.

- WALTHAM P. S. BARTLETT POCKET WATCH
WALTHAM P. S. BARTLETT POCKET WATCH & GOLD CASEFeatured in this lot is this 1900 Waltham P. S. Bartlett pocket watch set in a Fahys Montauk case. In Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1850, Aaron Lufkin Dennison, Edward Howard, and David Davis founded the Waltham Watch Company. As Eli Terry had done in the early 19th century, it was the first company in the US to mass-produce watches with interchangeable parts. The Waltham Watch Company was founded with the goal of producing watches of superior quality and dependability more cheaply and effectively. The Waltham Model 1857, the company's first pocket watch, was released in 1854. The accuracy and reliability of this watch contributed to its widespread popularity. Both the military and consumers started to highly value it. Waltham received numerous honors and recognition from around the world for their accuracy and craftsmanship. They had a reputation for having excellent movements and were frequently referred to as "Waltham railroad watches" because of their precision and widespread use by railroad workers. Early in the 20th century, the company had to contend with escalating competition from Swiss watchmakers and the rising demand for wristwatches. Waltham started making wristwatches in addition to their pocket watches in order to meet the shifting market demands. Over the years, the original Waltham Watch Company underwent a number of organizational changes and ownership shifts. Production fell off, and it eventually stopped operating in 1957. But the Waltham Watch Company of Switzerland, bought the rights to the Waltham name. The serial number inscribed alongside the movement is numbered, "10064826" indicating it was made in 1900. The pocket watch is grade P.S. Bartlett, 17 ruby jewel, size 18s, model 1883 and features a gilt movement finish and full plate. This pocket watch is not railroad graded. During this time, the unit underwent a number of reorganizations and modifications. The Halifax Rifles continued to serve as a militia unit after World War II, taking part in training drills and assisting civil authorities in times of need and during natural disasters. Additionally, the unit has participated in a number of international peacekeeping operations. - GUERRERO MEZCALA GREENSTONE TYPE M-22
GUERRERO MEZCALA GREENSTONE TYPE M-22 AXE GOD FIGUREPre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A large and pretty example of a hand-carved greenstone axe god of the Type M-22 that presents with abstract anthropomorphic features. The stylized figure stands with delineated, string-cut legs and holds both arms atop the slightly bulging stomach. A rounded chest with angular shoulders and a broad neck supports the oversized, bulbous head. The minimalist visage exhibits string-cut grooves denoting the eyes and brows, nasolabial folds, and mouth. The top of the head has clefts to indicate a headdress or coiffure, and two slight tabs below the bulging forehead add the appearance of ears. The stone is a smooth mottled green-gray hue with brown speckles and beige mineral deposits. Size: 5.25" L x 2" W (13.3 cm x 5.1 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
This particular Mezcala axe god exhibits features characteristic of M-22/M-24 Mezcala figures. The Mezcala style underwent a gradual evolutionary process, and M-22/M-24 were among the most advanced of the Mezcala types. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to eloquent, minimalist forms via this string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. Mezcala sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stone selected by the ancients
