Three French Third Republic BronzeThree French Third Republic Bronze Military Medals, including a shooting medal by Henri Naude (active ca. 1900), 1892, the obverse with a bust of Marianne and the legend "RF", the reverse with Nike above the battlefield and the legend "Grand Concours Militaire National de Tir/1892", dia. 51 mm; a military preparedness medal by Henri-Alfred-Auguste Dubois (ca. 1853-1943), ca. 1898, the obverse with a seated Marianne before a military parade and the legend "Union des Societes d'Instruction Militaire de France", the reverse with "La Marseillaise" after Francois Rude (1784-1855), dia. 51 mm; and a gilt World War I veteran's widow medal by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), 1919, the obverse with a Gallic horseman and vanquished foe and the legend "Les Medailles Militaires/Valeur - Discipline", the reverse with oak and laurel branches and inset die legend "Fete du 16-11-19/Mme Jacqueline Vaucaire", dia. 50 mm, the first touchmarked on the edge with the "cornucopia" medal mark in use from 1880, the other two with an unidentified triangular touchmark. After France's 1870 defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, numerous military instruction, shooting and gymnastic organizations sprang up throughout France in order to counter what was perceived in the country as gross ill-preparedness for combat. Many of these were combined in 1898 by Edmund Dolphus to form the Union des Societes d'Instruction Militaire de France.
French 18th century book platesFrench 18th century book plates depicting decisive battles; King Philippe-Auguste established France's military pre-eminence with the 1214 victory at Bouvines. The first hand colored scene recreates Mathieu II (Mathieu the Large) of Montmorency presenting his city to the King along with the standards of the defeated English King John. The second hand colored plate shows the French hero Francois of Lorraine breaking Charles V's siege of Metz in 1553. The plates are dated 1788 and 1792 respectively. 10" x 6 7/8". Good condition.

French Bronze Argente 1900 ExpositionFrench Bronze Argente 1900 Exposition Universelle and Second Olympics Medal, by Frederic-Charles-Victor de Vernon (1858-1912), the obverse with Nike over Paris and the legend "Republique Francaise/Exposition Universelle/Paris 1900", the reverse with a victorious athlete and the inset die legend "Exercice, Physiques et sports", h. 60 mm x 42 mm, touchmarked on the edge with the "cornucopia" medal mark in use from 1880. This medal was a participation medal in the gymnastic and field events of the 2nd Olympic Games, held concurrently with the 1900 Paris Exposition. These games were so overshadowed by the exposition that many athletes were themselves unaware that they had participated in the Olympics.
