TAMPA GIANT KEY TO CITY, 1966This giantTAMPA GIANT KEY TO CITY, 1966This giant gold plated cast bronze key weighs over five pounds and is 17-1/2" long. Tampa has big doors.Top of the key has the Tampa City Crest. The bit area is engraved "NICK NUCCIO/ 1966/ Mayor", and the stem of the key is engraved "Spyros Skouras". Nick was mayor of Tampa not once but twice, first from 1956-59 and then he did an encore 1963-67. It was during this latter mayorship that he presented the key to Skouras, who was a major movie producer, president of 20th Century Fox from 1942- 1962, perhaps best known as the man who signed up a new starlet who became Marilyn Monroe. There is no ready answer for why Skouros was given the key to the city in 1966. The heavy key has lost almost all of its plating on the top and sides except at the very top which has some plating chips. The back side, which rested against a wall, has most of its plating intact. Very impressive piece.

Biography from the artist's website: I began work as a graphic designer and returned to my painting and drawing over 30 years ago. In the beginning, my work was very realistic, but after a few years I began expressing myself through Abstraction and never looked back. I find abstract painting to be a sanctuary in which I can communicate so many things. Each painting tells its own story, which is why I call them Abstract Narratives. Painting has allowed me to work through some of the weighted questions in life, both politically and personally. I don't believe that the artists choose art; it is art that chooses us. It is my life force, my footprint, my souls private podium. My hope is to inspire and communicate to others through my work. Description of Work My paintings are large in format. My medium is generally acrylic with mixed media. I paint what I feel, not what I see, and have always believed that natural shapes are perfect despite their sometimes imperfect appearance. Biography from Baterbys Art Framing & Furniture: Alfred Alexander Gockel (1952-) is a German artist, born and raised in the coal mining community of Ludinghausen. He showed his artistic inclinations from a very young age, and with his parents' encouragement he had his first artwork released by a German publisher when he was only eight. As a teenager Gockel started working in the coal mines and was focused on becoming an engineer, but his artistic drive eventually pushed him toward studying art and design instead. This led him to start his own publishing company in 1983 in his home town, where he still publishes his own prints and limited edition silk-screens. With the introduction of his art to the U.S. market, Gockel participated in more art shows and since it takes him two to four hours to complete a painting, he decided to do live performances. Painting in front of people allowed him to draw energy from the audience, adding even more vibrancy to his works. In 2006 Alfred Gockel was commissioned by the United States Olympic committee to create an official piece of artwork for the Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. Gockel's boldly colored abstracts lined in thick black against white backdrops have become his signature, instantly recognizable around the globe. The widespread appeal of his art, to collectors from every walk of life and social status, has propelled his career to where Gockel has become one of the most prolific distributors of modern art posters in the world, with collectors in over 50 countries mixed media / gouache on paper Dimensions: 37"H x 38"W (sight) 51"H x 51"W (frame)
