RARE 'YARD LONG' PHOTO OF THE ANTI-EVOLUTIONISTSRARE 'YARD LONG' PHOTO OF THE ANTI-EVOLUTIONISTS AT THE 1925 SCOPES TRIAL, INCLUDING WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN Original Photo by M.C. Mayberry of Chatanooga, Tennessee captioned "Anti-Evolutionists, John T. Scopes Trial, Dayton, Tenn. July 10, 1925" (the trial concluded July 21st), actually 43" long, containing hundreds of people, captioned figures include "W.J. Bryan (politician who was counsel to the prosecution, died shortly after trial); "W.J. Bryan, Jr."; "Hicks, Pros. Atty.";" Judge and Mrs Raulston" (hardly unbiased!); "R. Don Lewis (Yellow Jacket)"; "Atty Genl McKenzie"; "Prosecutor W White"; "Butler Author of Anti-Evolution Bill" and "Thomas S. Nelson, Zion City". The banner in the background says "Read Your Bible". High School Teacher John Scopes was tried for teaching evolution, fined $100, with an injunction against such heresy.
This photo was taken on the first day of the trial, July 21st, does not include defendant's counsel Clarence Darrow, who arrived the next day. It concluded on July 21st. On Sunday, July 26, 1925, Bryan died in his sleep from apoplexy after attending a church service in Dayton.

Pencil-signed "Fraser" in the lower right margin, and titled in pencil "End of Trail" in the lower left margin. Image size is 9 x 12 inches, in a frame measuring 13.5 x 16.5 inches. Fraser was a noted artist with images of the American West. His works were shown in exhibitions including the 1898 Paris Salon, the 1913 New York Armory Show, and the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition. His commissions included a 1908 bust of Theodore Roosevelt, and the design of the Buffalo Head nickel, but it is?"End of the Trail" that remains perhaps Fraser's best known image.

Condition
Overall very good to good condition. Minor rubbing to the patina. One of the corners of the granite plinth has a chip.
