The project began in 1869 with architect Louis Boitte and sculptor Paul Dubois finding their inspiration in the Renaissance. The influence of Michelangelo is immediately evident in the offered work. The tomb depicts four allegorical virtues extolling the character of the general: "Courage", "Faith", "Study" or "Meditation", and "Charity".
