Content relates to settlement of Indian accounts including reimbursement for passage on the Oregon Steam Navigation Co.? Signed Del. Floyd-Jones / Col. U.S.A.Floyd-Jones of Long Island graduated West Point in 1846 commissioned a second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry for service in the Mexican War where he saw action in the Battles of Veracruz and Mexico City.? He was assigned to garrison and recruiting duty in Mississippi Michigan and the West Coast in the years before the Civil War at which point he was promoted to major in the 11th U.S. Infantry.? He fought most of the war in Virginia and Maryland being twice brevetted for gallantry: to lieutenant colonel for actions in the Peninsula Campaign and to colonel for actions at Gettysburg where his regiment suffered heavy losses in the Wheatfield.? Once receiving his a full promotion Lieutenant Colonel Floyd-Jones spent the final months of the war commanding the defenses at Boston Harbor.? He commanded forts throughout the South and West following the Civil War and had just finished a stint as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Idaho Territory when this letter was written.
