"Cy" Farnum, as he was more generally known, was a pupil of the Rhode Island School of Design. Farnum studied at the Academie Julien in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and (Benjamin) Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant where he won several awards for drawings. He also studied at Académie Colarossi in the evening, studying figure drawing under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Castaigne. He also had the advantage of criticism from Adolphe William Bouguereau. Handsome letterpress broadside advertises a variety show at the Argyle Theatre of Varities, Birkenhead, on which Freeman the “only rival of Carl Hertz” appears alongside acrobatic wonders, humorists, trained dogs, singers, and “black-and-white face comedians.” 10 ¼ x 3". Two edges ragged. B.

Franklin Booth (American, 1874-1948), a rustic scene with a cottage surrounded by gnarly trees, an elderly woman walks down a stone path towards a flock of blackbirds in the foreground; pen and ink drawing; 8 1/4" x 7 1/4"; signed lower left. An illustrator admired for his craftsmanship and imaginative works, Booth was born and raised on a farm in Carmel, Indiana. By 1907 his own work was to be found in Scribners and other prominent magazines. Around 1910, he moved to New York and set up a studio. He lived there for the rest of his life.
