Note: For the ninety years of its existence, from 1836-1926, the Astor House Hotel offered its clientele the height of luxury. John Jacob Astor built his 309 room hotel in the city's most fashionable residential district, at the corner of Broadway and Vesey Street. The ground floor building at the far right of the facade is the Rushton & Aspinwall drug store that opened at 10 Astor house in 1836. The most influential men and women of the day were guests at one time or another, including Abraham Lincoln on his way to the 1861 inauguration.

Smith,1891 ALS, 4 pp, with envelope addressed to Mrs. Josephine Farrel, Hardware Merchant, Nashville Tenn. from "Poor Genl. Smith". General Smith suffered a significant head wound during the Battle of Nashville and as a result, spent the latter part of his life confined to a mental institution, where he penned this rambling, mostly nonsensical letter. He does make brief mention of a connection between himself and Josephine: "I value the old block of your house because it was made by some of my kinfolk the silversmith Elliston Josephine's Farrel's Grandfather" [Joseph Thorpe Elliston, a silversmith who also served as Nashville's mayor]. Stamp missing. Includes old newspaper article on Smith. Rare. 2nd item: Union Maj. General Emery Upton signed requisition document dated June 1, 1865, Nashville, on a form printed by the Government Printing House in Union-occupied Nashville. 3rd item: 1865 letter written at Murfreesboro, TN by Union soldier William Henry Fox, "188 Regt. Co. D.O.V. I" (possibly Indiana), to his wife, telling her of the end of the war and his desire to return home to her and their baby and to meet his in-laws. 4 pp. 4th item: Tennessee Civil War Gov. Isham Harris signed receipt of the Resignation of James Edmund Bailey on Military and Financial Board letterhead dated Nashville, Dec. 20, 1861. Bailey resigned in order to organize a company of soldiers that would become Company A, 49th Infantry Regt. TN Volunteers. After the war, Bailey became a U.S. Senator. 5th item: Illegibly signed and partially printed ticket allowing Mrs. Elizabeth C. Grissom to pass within Federal Lines, dated Gallatin Tn, July 7, 1864. 6th item: H.H. Harris signed partially printed note that Bartley Griffin of Knoxville, TN "has furnished proof of loyalty," dated Jan. 26, 1864. 7th item: Telegraph message dated June 15, 1861, Humboldt, Tennessee, to General Gideon Pillow, stating "Will you send arms for that company if so when" and signed "Algee." 8th item: CSA Lt. R.C. Bone (1st Lt. Co. D, 11th Tennessee) signed note verifying a payment of $1500 for a horse belonging to C.S. Dillon, killed in action near Readiville TN on Sept. 6, 1864 (losses to top edge, 1/4" hole upper right of page). 9th item: Small lithographed print of the Soldier's Home at Memphis Tenn, established 1863, by Chas. Vogt after A. McLean. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2".
