Two female figures are seated with a male attendant, watching a hunter with a rifle. Rolling fields are dotted with fluffy sheep, the landscape recedes and at the center a lake and manor house. A record with the Cumbria Archive Service Catalogue preserves that, "The 4th baronet, Sir Michael, was christened 'le' bringing the old family name back into use. The title and the estate split after the male entail was canceled in the 18th century and the estate descended to Sir Michael's daughter, Anne Frederica Elizabeth le Fleming, and her descendants. Anne married the 5th baronet, Sir Daniel Fleming of West Cumbria in 1807 after a short-lived marriage he moved to Hill Top in Crosthwaite where he lived with his mistress and their children while she remained with her mother Lady Diana at Rydal, until her death in 1861." DON BALKE (B. 1933) "SNOWSHOE HARE"DonDON BALKE (B. 1933) "SNOWSHOE HARE"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Snowshoe Hare and White Oak" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Paper.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This art was originally published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States.
A shy, retiring little fellow, the Snowshoe Hare frolics in Connecticut's evergreen forests. Suddenly, crisp fallen leaves from the state tree, the White Oak, rustle softly and the Snowshoe Hare freezes. Perfectly camouflaged against the snowy background, only his dark tipped ears and glistening black eyes peek out from the winter whiteness. Quivering slightly, the white hare waits patiently for suspected danger to pass and then gleefully continues his romp. The Snowshoe Hare uses the natural hair-covered overshoes on his hind feet to glide effortlessly across deep drifts without sinking into the fluffy snow. In spring, Snowshoe Hares move into thick forests where small clearings offer both food and protection. During the warm months they also "change clothes," donning basic brown as a natural camouflage. Because these furry mammals change color with the season, many refer to them as Varying Hares. Much like fictitious rabbits and haras such as the famous Peter Rabbit, Varying Hares spend most of their days fighting for survival. Extremely tasty to most carnivores, they are hunted widely by both man and beast. As if to compensate for the understandably short life spans, the Snowshoe Hares are unusually prolific. After a gestation period of about thirty-six days, the females give birth to anywhere from two to seven bunnies. Unlike their close relatives the rabbits, hares are bigger, have longer legs, taller ears and their young are born already covered with fur and with their eyes open.

CHINESE TANG DYNASTY SEATED CAMEL WEARINGCHINESE TANG DYNASTY SEATED CAMEL WEARING SADDLE, TL'DEast Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A handsome terracotta statue of a camel, shown seated with legs bent beneath him and head tilted skyward as a removable saddle is draped across its double-humped back. The lengthy neck swoops upward to support the naturalistic head, featuring a bulbous snout, a closed mouth, sizeable, delineated nostrils, and a pair of pointed ears. Fluffy tufts of hair adorn his front legs, humps, neck, and the top of the head, adding texture and realism to the animal, while a slender tail extends from its posterior. The belly of the camel has a large opening that acts as a vent hole. Note the chalky remains of tan, black, white, and brown paints that further enhance the creature's appearance. Size: 16.2" L x 7.7" W x 6.8" H (41.1 cm x 19.6 cm x 17.3 cm)
Camels symbolized wealth and commerce in early Chinese culture. The Silk Road was established during the Han Dynasty, and connected China to central Asia, India, Persia, Africa, and southeastern Asia; creating vast trade networks and ushering China into a golden age. The Bactrian camel carried most of the trade goods and came to represent this age of prosperity. To reach these far destinations, merchants traveled through the harsh Taklamakan Desert, and the Bactrian camel was vital to this transport because of its abilities to go without water for a week, to travel 30 miles a day, and to withstand very hot and very cold temperatures, all while carrying hundreds of pounds on its back!
