George Rodrigue (American/LouisianaGeorge Rodrigue (American/Louisiana b. 1944) "The Flowers of Susan" 1991 acrylic on canvas signed lower left signed titled and dated en verso 24 in. x 20 in. framed. Note: The woman represented in this painting is inspired by the iconic Acadian heroine Evangeline made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem of 1847. Rodrigue often painted her with the typical "black eyes" and "brown tresses" from the poem. While he used several models sitting most often was Diane Bernard Keogh the daughter of friends of the artist. The figure here is depicted here with her basket of roses as narrated in Longfellow's poem and the model's melancholy expression adds to the romantic sadness of the story of the star-crossed lovers Evangeline and Gabriel.
