Chinese Ming Polychrome Head - Bodhisattva Guanyin: East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A magnificent and large stucco head depicting the Bodhisattva Guanyin in the round, donning an elaborate crown adorned with carved symbols and painted in bright hues. The bodhisattva has a characteristically plump face with a fleshy chin and rosy cheeks. She stares serenely forward with upturned red lips, and lidded almond shaped eyes with brown pupils that give a lifelike quality to the visage. A red urna, the auspicious third eye is set in the center of the forehead. Locks of black hair drape over the characteristically elongated ears. According to tradition the Guanyin can hear and respond to the suffering of all beings and the long ears symbolize this attentive listening. Atop the head is a traditional multi-paneled ringa that is tied at the back with a red cord. A meditating Buddha is relief carved into the front panel. All is painted in vibrant hues of red, pink, white, blue, and gold gilding. Guanyin, known outside China as Avalokitesvara, "The Lord Who Gazes Down At The World, " is often portrayed as both male or female, and the soft but androgynous features of this example gives an impression of ethereal beauty. In Chinese art from this time period and earlier, they are depicted as less austere than Buddhas, with graceful postures and elegant garments, a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road. This piece is no exception of the extravagant style! Size: 13" L x 12" W x 15. 5" H (33 cm x 30. 5 cm x 39. 4 cm); 21" H (53. 3 cm) on included custom stand. . Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Bodhisattvas or Guanyin are associated with compassion and mercy - their long ears significant, because they rescue all human beings by hearing their cries for help and the sounds of suffering. . . Chinese Han Blackware Amphora, Bronze Bosses - TL & XRF: East Asia, China, Western Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 9 CE. An impressive, twin-handled, burnished blackware amphora of a globular form with bold, arching handles that join rim (in a flush manner) to shoulder, adorned with 22 well-patinated circular bronze bosses whose protruding centers are surrounded by beaded borders. Embellishing the vessel even more are delineated ridges running from the points of the flared neck to the body, boldly modeled swirls surrounding the larger bosses on the body, incised flaring leaf-like and nested arch motifs and concave depressions on the handles, as well as an incised register adorned with three bands of vertical frets around the neck. Truly one of the most exquisite ancient Chinese vessels we have ever handled! Size: 11. 5" L x 12. 75" W x 13" H (29. 2 cm x 32. 4 cm x 33 cm). . This type of double-handled amphora was made in western Sichuan province, in central China, and is known as "Lifan" after the area where vessels like it are found. The style is fascinating, very different from others created during the Han period, and seems to be an artistic callback to the elegant forms of the Chinese Neolithic era. These vessels are found mainly within rock-cut tombs and cist burials, with a few examples known from the more classically Han chambered brick tombs. This suggests that these vessels were made by immigrants or members of non-dominant ethnic groups within Han China, probably people who lived a nomadic lifestyle centered on husbandry while their Chinese contemporaries led more sedentary, agricultural-based lifestyles. . A similar example, though without any bronze bosses that we see adorning this example, sold for $8, 125 at Sotheby's New York - 08 December 2011 to 09 December 2011 - Lot 143. (https://www. sothebys. com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2011/property-from-the-collection-of-dodie-rosekrans-n08818/lot. 143. html?locale=en). . See another very similar example, with bronze bosses, at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts from the prestigious Wang Collection (https://www. kiarts. org/page. php?page_id=525). . This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase. . In addition, this piece has been tested for the presence or absence of particular elements via XRF elemental analysis. A full report is included with the purchase. . . Provenance: ex-San Francisco, California, USA collection. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. . #147004 Condition Expected surface wear with nicks to edges of the neck, handles, base, and ridge/swirl marks. Otherwise intact and excellent. Bronze bosses present beautiful green patina. Handwritten old inventory numbers and TL hole on underside of base.

Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 2000.The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.Notes:The house flag at the main is indistinct, but most likely is that of the Falls Line, owned by Wright, Graham and Co., who had the vessel built for the Calcutta trade. After initial voyages to Calcutta, she tramped the world for the first 20 years of her existence. In 1898 she was sold to Arthur Brown of Honolulu, who turned around and sold her to the Matson Navigation Co. to trade primarily between San Francisco and Hawaii. For nine years she sailed for the Matson Line under the Hawaiian flag, carrying passengers and cargo from the mainland. When Hawaii became a territory in 1900 she was placed under U.S. registry. In 1907 she was sold to Associated Oil Co. who installed ten bulk fuel tanks, converting her to a tanker. In 1921, after several owners, she was dismasted and converted to a floating oil and gas depot to service the fishing fleet at Ketchikan, Alaska, where she remained until 1958. In 1959 she was towed to Seattle and laid up as a derelict. In November 1963 she was towed to Hawaii and became the Falls of Clyde Maritime Museum in 1964.Lai Fong was a Chinese artist working in the final quarter of the 19th Century, primarily from his studio in the port of Calcutta. He was influenced by an earlier generations of Chinese ship portraitists, including Lee Heng (fl. 1850-1870), Hing Qua (fl.1850-1880) and Lai Sung (fl. 1850-1885). Lai Fong was known especially for portraying the big windjammers, such as the four-masted Falls of Clyde , which called at Calcutta, voyaging either to or from the Far East.

A FRANK DORN ILLUSTRATED MAP OF PEIPING/BEIJING 1936 Frank Dorn, (American, 1901-1981), illustrated map of Peiping/Peking/Beijing, published in Tientsin-Peiping by Peiyang Press, 1935. A fine example of the iconic map from the well-known illustrator, Frank 'Pinky' Dorn, who was an aide to General Stilwell, commander of the US and Nationalist Chinese resistance against Japan in China and Burma. The map outlines Beijing within the old city walls, and surrounded by vignettes depicting episodes in Chinese history. Description cartouche reads 'A Map and History of Peiping; formerly known as Peking, capital of provinces, princedoms, and kingdoms since 1121 B.C.; in 1264 A.D. the capital of the Mongol Empire of Kublai Khan; made the capital of the Ming Empire and built as it is today by Yung Lo in 1421; continued as the capital of the Chinese Empire through the Ming and Ching Dynasties; and now a city which will live long in the memory of man as one of the greatest the world has ever known. Completed on this fifth day of February in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-Six.' A San Francisco native, Frank Dorn attended West Point and received a commission in the Field Artillery. Practically his entire service career was in the far east, from Beijing to Burma, until he retired in 1953 and returned to San Francisco where he lived until his death in 1981. A remarkable example, professionally dry mounted on board and in a bamboo style frame. Measures 34 x 30 inches overall.

Alfred Richard Gurrey, Sr., Hawaii, (1852 - 1944) North Kauai Shoreline, Hawaii, 1918, oil on canvas. signed and dated lower right. From the collection of Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher and Historian, Greenville, Michigan. Biography from the Archives of askART: Biography from Hawaiian Art Collection Alfred Richard Gurrey, Sr. (1852-1944) Noted for his Hawaiian landscapes, Alfred R. Gurrey was born in England, and moved to the United States at age twenty. He worked for Fireman's Fund Insurance in San Francisco, and was sent by that company to Honolulu in 1900, working as an insurance adjuster and as secretary of the Board of Fire Underwriters of the Territory of Hawaii. Gurrey lacked formal art training, but was a member of the Pallet Club of San Francisco, and in Honolulu became deeply involved in the artistic world there in the early 1900s. He was elected to the Kilohana Art League, and participated in their exhibits for many years. He also established an arts and antiques store, Gurrey's, in Honolulu. Alfred Gurrey and his wife had a son, Alfred Richard Gurrey, Jr., and a daughter, Florence Gurrey (who later married Carl Bayer). Florence exhibited many of her father's marine vistas in her Aina Haina (Honolulu area) home. In 1996 the Gurrey-Bayer family donated thirty of Alfred R. Gurrey Sr.'s paintings to the Kauai Museum in Lihue. Gurrey's son, Alfred R. Gurrey Jr. was proprietor of the Gurrey Art Shop for many years. Gurrey Sr.'s paintings often depicted ocean scenes due to his love of the ocean and sailing. He was one of the early members of the Outrigger Canoe Club of Honolulu, and prior to moving to the islands had been Commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco. Often using a fresh color palette and free brush technique, he painted landscapes directly from nature. Watercolor was a frequent medium. For reasons that remain unclear, Gurrey Sr. became estranged from his Honolulu family, and after his retirement from the Board of Fire Underwriters in 1916 moved to Kauai, where he continued to paint the scenery of that island. A profile in The Garden Island (April 2, 1918) titled 'Kauai's Great Artists', states: 'Kauai is home of one of the greatest artists that the United States can boast of, and the world has known it not. We think his marine views are sufficiently beautiful, grand, and impressive to attract attention in any art center in the United States… Mr. Gurrey doesn't have to advertise, nor ask favors of anyone.' He loved to hike, and made the most of his years on the beautiful island of Kauai. Fascinated by the sea, he purchased properties at Hanalei, Kalihiwai, and Po'ipu (then known as Koloa Beach). At Hanalei and Kalihiwai he constructed wooden 'tents' built for extended painting expeditions. For a time he lived with his daughter and son-in-law at Makaweli. Between 1920 and 1926, Gurrey held an annual pre-Christmas exhibition in the Lihu'e (Kauai) Parish Hall, the Lihu'e Library and the Ele'ele Hall. He opened a studio behind the Bank of America there in 1928, and continued to paint on Kauai throughout his long life. Many of his works remain in the homes for which they were originally purchased, treasured reminders of the particular cultural circle that flourished in the islands from the turn of the century on through the 1930s. Along with David Howard Hitchcock, Otto Wix, and others, Gurrey exhibited both on Kauai and on Oahu at the semi-annual shows of the Kilohana Art League. (Regarding A. R. Gurrey Sr.'s son, Alfred Richard Gurrey, Jr.) Some confusion exists between the biography of Alfred Richard Gurrey, Sr. (1852-1944) and that of his son, Alfred Richard Gurrey, Jr. (b. ? - 1928), who died prematurely, around age fifty, following complications from a surgery in 1928. Discrepancies also occur as to the dates when Gurrey Sr., vs. Gurrey Jr., may have been involved with the Gurrey Art Shop in Honolulu. The son, Alfred R. Gurrey, Jr., was married to well-known photographer Caroline Haskins Gurrey, and they both were very involved in the art culture of the islands. For many years Gurrey Jr. managed the above-mentioned Gurrey's art and antique shop in Honolulu, where he was a dealer in pictures, ornaments, antiques, and curios, and was well-beloved as a supporter of the arts and artists. As proprietor of an art supply store and gallery, Gurrey Jr. was well acquainted with many artists and was a strong supporter. In his book Encounters With Paradise, David Forbes wrote that it was at Alfred R. Gurrey's urging that Lionel Walden (1861-1933) was persuaded in 1917 to hold his first one-person show. It is most likely that this mention refers to Alfred R. Gurrey, Jr., vs. his father, as records indicate Gurrey Sr. moved to Kauai after his 1916 retirement. In any case, a 1917 exhibit of Walden's work was held at the residence of the Charles M. Cooke family, now the location of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Walden, (who had come to the islands at the invitation of James 'Kimo' Wilder, a Hawaii-born artist he had met in Paris in 1911), went on to become regarded by many as the finest seascape painter to work in Hawaii. Forbes goes on to say that Gurrey was also responsible for arranging for the first island show of the works of Charles W. Bartlett (1960-1940), shortly after Bartlett's arrival in Hawaii from travels in India, China, and Japan. That exhibition was also held at the Cooke home in 1917. Bartlett ended up remaining in the islands for the remainder of his life. Despite his involvement with such talented artists, Gurrey Jr., however, did not find commercial success from his endeavors at his art shop, and ultimately turned to the insurance field. A. R. Gurrey, Jr. was married in 1903 to Caroline Haskins Gurrey (b.? - d.1927), a noted photographer of Hawaiian subjects. Together they had two children: a son, Richard ('Dick', who later married artist Hartley Fletcher (1907-1986), and a daughter, Gwendolyn, (later married to Roger Williams of Honolulu). For many years Alfred Jr. and Caroline maintained a home on Manoa Road, in Manoa Valley, Honolulu, part of which served as Caroline's photography studio. Framed photographs by Caroline often had on their frame's reverse a label from the Gurrey Honolulu Art Shop. At the time of Caroline's death in 1927, she and Alfred R. Gurrey Jr. were living at a home at Black Point, Honolulu. Her husband, Alfred R. Gurrey, Jr., died soon after. He pre-deceased his father, dying from complications following a surgery in 1928, shortly after the marriage of his daughter, Gwendolyn, to Roger Williams of Honolulu. Black Hand $5, 000 Extortion Letter: 8"X12" lined paper extortion letter, likely early 20th century, signed and imprinted with a Black Hand. Impressive and scary. The Black Hand was a type of Italian extortion racket, not a criminal organization per se. By 1900, Black Hand operations were firmly established in the Italian communities of major cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, Scranton, San Francisco, Olean, New York, and Detroit. Handwritten in ink the letter begins with a name that appears to be Tom Eno "leave $5000 on the 1st day of October 3 pm on the table under sugar bowl (indecipherable) Stuff Birds in the middle of the room of Tom Dalys restaurant. Should you fail to do this Beware of the Black Hand. Final Notice. " Along the left margin, "WE are onto your doings and unless this money is there at the appropriate time Beware - Beware-Beware-Beware - Be sure you are alone as we are desperate and you will be in great danger if you have company. " Large hand is drawn on the page in black and purple inks, signed in bold print "BLACK HAND" Unique and RARE. Never saw another. Early 20th Century Generals Group of Autographs Including Malin Craig Lot of 5 including: Malin Craig ALS 1922; Frederick Funston TLS 1907; Leonard Wood MOH TLS 1925; R.L. Bullard TLS 1920; and Hugh L. Scott TLS 1909 on West Point letterhead. TLS 1p. 15 Jan. 1907 St. Louis MO (HQ Southwestern Division letterhead). Frederick Funston Brig. Gen. Funston (1865-1917) was too short and underweight to qualify for West Point. His military career began in the service of Cuba fighting for independence from Spain. Two years later he would be fighting with the 20th Kansas in the Spanish-American War this time in the Philippines. He was again denied a commission but his capture of Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo changed all of that. Funston received an appointment as Brigadier General and a Medal of Honor for his actions. 1906 found him in command of the Presidio of San Francisco when the earthquake hit. Although martial law was never declared it was Funston who decided to save what he could of the city by creating a firebreak. He also order that looters be shot on sight. It probably did not eliminate looting and there are reports of honest citizens being shot trying to rescue some of their belongings but many think that things probably would have been worse without this heavy-handed approach given the state of affairs in the city. Funston indirectly worked himself to death preparing for the U.S. entry into WWI in 1917 succumbing to a massive heart attack in San Antonio TX. TNS 1p 29 Jan. 1925 Manila on Office of the Governor General letterhead. Signed by Leonard Wood. Leonard Wood (1860-1927) was trained as a physician and took a position as an Army contract physician in 1885. He was stationed in Arizona and participated in the last campaign against Geronimo. He received the Medal of Honor in 1898 for carrying dispatches through enemy territory and taking command of a unit whose officers had been lost. Wood was personal physician to Cleveland and McKinley until 1898 when the Spanish-American War broke out. He had developed a friendship with Teddy Roosevelt and together they organized the ''Rough Riders.'' Wood remained as Military Governor of Santiago in 1898 and of Cuba 1899-1902. He proceeded to the Philippines in 1902 and was appointed Army Chief of Staff by Taft in 1910 the only medical officer to hold that position. While in this position he started developing a ''preparedness'' program similar to today's ROTC. He became embroiled in politics at the start of WWI and spent most of the war training at Camp Funston. He retired from the Army in 1921 and spent the next six years as Governor-General of the Philippines. He died from complications of surgery for a brain tumor. ALS 2pp 5.25 x 7 in. on Cavalry School Fort Riley KS letterhead 21 Jan. 1922. Malin Craig (1875-1945) graduated from USMA in 1898 and served in the Spanish-American War immediately after graduation. He was sent to China during the Boxer Rebellion and later was sent to the Philippines. Attended the Infantry and Cavalry School and Army War College between postings. He went to France with the AEF during WWI. He had a variety of postings before being appointed as Chief of Staff of the Army from 1935 - 1939 then retiring in 1939. However the advent of WWII resulted in him being recalled to head the Personnel Board for the Secretary of War. He died in Washington in July 1945 just before the war ended. TNS 1p 5 x 8 in. 16 Mar. 1920 on HQ Eastern Division letterhead Governor's Island NY. Signed by R.L. Bullard as Lieut. General. Bullard (1861-1947) graduated from USMA in 1885 and while he served in the later Indian Wars and Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars he seems to be best known for his actions during WWI. He quickly rose to Maj. General and command of the ''Big Red One'' (1st ID). When Pershing created the Second Army he put Bullard in as its first commander with the rank of Lieutenant General. Bullard retired in 1925 to write. TNS 1p 15 June 1909 on USMA letterhead West Point NY. Signed by Hugh Lenox Scott as Superintendent of the Academy. Letter to the Mayor of Newburgh NY sending regrets that the cadets cannot participate in the Hudson-Fulton commemoration since they have a previous engagement on that date. Hugh Lenox Scott (1853-1934) graduated from West Point in 1876 in the heat of the Indian Wars in the west. One of his first postings was to mark out the graves for Custer's men on the Little Big Horn battle site. In 1890-91 he was sent to suppress the Ghost Dance movement commanding the last Indian Troop in the Army composed primarily of Kiowa Comanche and Apache Indians. He had post-war positions in Cuba and the Philippines before being appointed superintendent of USMA. He was Chief of Staff of the Army from 1914-1917. His major roles in these later years were diplomatic ones especially along the Mexican Border. After retirement in 1919 he served for a decade on the Board of Indian Commissioners. Condition: Three have tape remains. The Bullard letter has ink from the Funston letter on it and the Funston letter has ink smear apparently from water damage.

Chinese Tang Dynasty Polychrome Horse w/ TL: East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A lovely mold-made pottery horse shown in stride atop an integral plinth. Painted in hues of apricot, peach, and chocolate brown, the noble steed displays a naturalistic head with a bulbous snout, incised nostrils, and almond-shaped eyes, all capped by a pair of perky ears. His thick body bears an elaborate saddle featuring lengthy polka-dot-incised saddle flaps beneath a striped sash. A slender tapered tail extends downwards from the ancient horse's posterior and an ovoid vent is featured on the animal's underside. Size: 8. 75" L x 5" W x 7. 5" H (22. 2 cm x 12. 7 cm x 19 cm); 7. 75" H (19. 7 cm) on included custom stand. . According to Zhixin Jason Sun, Curator of the Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The importance of horses rose to new heights in the Tang dynasty (618–907) when, as emblems of imperial power, they marched in state processions, galloped through royal hunting parks, raced across polo fields, and even danced before the emperor. Their portraits were painted by leading court artists, and their majestic form was modeled in brightly glazed pottery as tomb figurines and sculpted on marble plaques to adorn emperors' tombs as symbols of dynastic vitality. " Beyond this, the horse played a significant role in the unification of the Chinese Empire, as the ancients could communicate to parties near and far due to the great speed of these noble steeds. The horse also assisted the military to conquer distant lands and grow the empire. As the desire for stronger, faster breeds grew, the ancients imported horses from Central Asia, leading to the creation of the famous Silk Road. . . We see evidence of the reverence for the horse in the visual culture of ancient China. Imagery of horses abound in painting, literature, and sculpture. During the Tang dynasty, artists created burial art representing these revered animals. This particular piece depicts a large charger; this type of horse served as both a symbol of imperial stability that engendered bountiful trade and prosperity for the expanding empire and the reward of military exploits to the west. The most cherished horses were raised in the western kingdom of Ferghana and known as "blood-sweating horses. " These were delivered as tribute to the reigning emperor. In general, for the ancient Chinese, horses were a sign of wealth. . This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase. . . Provenance: private Reno, Nevada, USA collection, acquired through descent, originally purchased in San Francisco, California, USA in the 1960s to 1970s. . Early 20th Century Generals Group of Autographs Including James Harbord & Malin Craig Lot of 6 including: Malin Craig (2) Brigadier General Army Cuba Boxer Rebellion World War I and II ALS 1905 and TLS 1921; James Harbord TLS 1932; Leonard Wood MOH TNS 1923; and Frederick Funston (2) MOH TNS 1906 and TLS 1907. TNS 1p 6 Sept. 1923 Manila on Office of the Governor-General of the Philippines letterhead. He died from complications of surgery for a recurring brain tumor. TNS 1p 20 Nov. 1906 St. Louis MO on HQ Southwestern Division card. and TLS 1p 4 April 1907 St. Louis MO on HQ Southwestern Division letterhead. Both signed by Frederick Funston. ALS 1+ pp 25 April 1905 Fort Leavenworth KS U.S. Staff College letterhead. and TLS 1p 8 Dec. 1921 Fort Riley KS Cavalry School letterhead. Both signed by Malin Craig. Malin Craig (1875-1945) graduated from USMA in 1898 and served in the Spanish American War immediately after graduation. TNS 1p 5 Dec. 1932. Probably a response to a request for an autograph. Signed J.G. Harbord. James Guthrie Harbord (1866-1947) enlisted in 1889 and received a commission in 1891. He also served in the occupation of Cuba and then was sent to the Philippines. He chased Pancho Villa around with John J. Pershing and went to France as Pershing's chief of staff. He was sent on fact-finding missions to the Middle East to investigate the feasibility of a Jewish state and to report on the Armenian genocide. Harbord retired in 1922 and put in another 25 years - another whole career! - as president of RCA. He retired shortly before his death in 1947. Condition: Most with tape and/or water stains; the typed Funston letter with ink bleed which is on the second Funston letter with small spots on both Craig letters.

Hayes Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio For similar examples see West Point Military Academy, West Point, New York Rutherford B. Hays Presidential Center, Freemont, Ohio During his reign (1661-1722) the educated and enlightened Emperor Kangxi traded and learned from Europeans while resisting their expansion. He invited Jesuits to court to teach mathematics, geography and science, as well as help in diplomatic and military affairs, all in an effort to modernize the Empire. The Emperor was known as a diligent and fair ruler, reigning for 61 years. The Jesuit priest Ferdinand Verbiest was born in 1623 in Belgium. His Chinese name was Nan Huairen. In 1659 he arrived in China, and by 1660 he was summoned to Beijing to assist Johann Adam Schall von Bell, the German missionary in charge of the Imperial Astronomy Board. At court, Verbiest taught rulers and high court officials. He composed a table of all solar and lunar eclipses for the next 2000 years, thus reworking the calendar, and was awarded head of the Mathmatical Board and Director of the Observatory by the Emperor. In 1673 half of China's territory was swept into "the Rebellion of the three Feudatories". The Emperor realized the repression of the rebellion would require a much improved artillery, with particular focus on mobile and nimble cannon. Verbiest was asked to take part in the casting of these light cannon. The Emperor sent orders to the board of war When Our Grand Army marches to suppress the rebels, it will need firearms very badly. We order Nan Huairen, the Director of the Imperial Board of Astronomy, to cast light but effective cannon, convenient for transportation, Kangxi shilu, p. 6b. quoted in the translation of Fu Lo-shu, A Documentary Chronical of Sino-Western Relations (1644-1820). Verbiest fulfilled his orders. A total of 905 cannon were cast during the Emperor Kangxi's reign, more than half were under Verbiest's supervision. Verbiest wrote a book on how to cast cannon for the Qing government titled the Shenwu tushuo, which has since been destroyed, but is described in another publication by Verbiest Xichao ding'an. Three types of cannon designed by Verbiest are mentioned in the Qinding da Qing huidian (Great Qing code approved by the Emperor), shenwei, wuchengyonggu and shengong. The cannon offered in the current sale is of the shengong variety. The overseers listed are Ba Fu Shou and Shuo Si Tai, the craftsmen Li Wende and Yuan Shi, in keeping with the inscription on the gun. The cannon are always cast in bronze, the mouth of the barrel being a little narrower than the rear part. The central part of the barrel is situated with two axles which support balance and adjust the slant while enlarging the cannon's power and movability, thus meeting the needs of the warfare of the Qing Dynasty. In a letter to The Honorable L. E. Holden, president Western Reserve Historical Society, dated 9 May 1901 written at Spiegel Grove, Fremont, Ohio Lieutenant Colonel Webb C. Hayes described the background of his war souvenirs Dear Mr. Holden, I am happy to announce the arrival here of the Tartar bronze cannon which I found as part of the defense of the Ha Ta Gate of the Tartar City of Peking. These three guns were supposed to have been brought to Peking when the Mongols or Tartars conquered the Chinese some four hundred years ago and established the present reigning Tartar dynasty. These guns were used not only in bombarding the Legation but also against the allies, so it is said, and were the most interesting guns from a curio standpoint found on top of the Tartar wall of the city of Peking. The inscription on the cannon I hope can be deciphered. There were but three of these guns on the wall of Peking, and all were under Russian jurisdiction but through the efforts of Lt. Colonels [Joseph T.] Dickman [U.S.V., General Chaffee's Assistant Chief of Staff] and [Henry O.] Heistand, both Ohio men, I secured the promise of them all. Unfortunately, however, the Russians surrendered the care of the Ha Ta Gate to the Germans and with it the control of these guns, so that the whole question had to be taken up again. The three guns were hauled to Tung Chow some 15 or 20 miles and then dismantled an placed on Chinese junks for the 100 mile trip down the Pei Ho (River) to Tein Tsin (illegible)-then by rail to Tong Ku some thirty miles-then by lighter to the transport off Taku and thence to San Francisco. I believe that these are the only Chinese cannon brought to the United States. Very Truly Yours, (signed) Webb C. Hayes.

Imperial Silks - Ch'ing Dynasty Textiles in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 2 Volumes Minneapolis: Minneapolis Institute Arts, 2000. 2 volumes with DJ in slipcase. Two-volume catalog presents the Ch'ing dynasty imperial textiles and costumes from the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, considered one of the finest and most comprehensive holdings outside of China. Approximately half of the collection belonged to San Francisco attorney William E. Colby, who amassed it throughout the opportunistic decades of the 1920's and 1930's. Only a few works from the 592-piece collection have been exhibited over the past six decades; the 1991 exhibit "Imperial Silks of the Ch'ing Dynasty" displayed more of the collection than ever before, and is the foundation of this comprehensive catalogue. Imperial Silks opens with an overview of the archaeological record of silk in China and then divides the museum's collection of Ch'ing dynasty textiles into nine chapters covering 26 basic categories of garments, decorative furnishings, and accessories. Nearly every piece is photographed, many are in color, and about 200 of the primary objects are accompanied by a technical analysis that includes the structure of the fabric, thread counts, and dyes used. Measures approx. 14"H x 10"W x 5-1/2"D.
