CIRCLE OF GEORGE STUBBS (ENGLISHCIRCLE OF GEORGE STUBBS (ENGLISH 1724-1806) A CONVERSAT...circle of GEORGE STUBBS (English 1724-1806) A CONVERSATION PAINTING, "Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald with his Sons, Wife and Horses," CIRCA 1755, oil on canvas, verso an old paper label identifying sitter. 8 1/2" x 29 1/4" Note: The Earl is seated with another nobleman at far right. Servants and locals mingle in the countryside attending casually to the aristocratic family. The Earl's second wife, Jane Stuart, dressed in yellow is perhaps having her palm read by a fortune-teller, while her nursemaid pulls her arm back. Country folk sit with infants and an old man is seated by the horses. An unusual landscape scene that fits into the British conversation tradition, but also excitingly includes portraits of two very fine horses, varying from formal portraits of the same period slightly. One horse is shown from the rear with a rider that appears to riding sidesaddle and wearing a cropped red riding habit. The sex of the rider arguable for the mystery seems intentional. The 8th Earl had one daughter who died unmarried. The brown horse is awaiting a saddle held by a female groom. The viewer should note the sandy and rocky landscape, the lack of leafy trees is curious for the period and distinctly consistent with George Stubbs oeuvre. George Stubbs, best known for his horse and animal paintings, also painted portraits of noble families. A self-taught artist, his works have a distinct minimalistic background and landscapes are somewhat abstracted when compared to his contemporaries, examples of which can be seen here in the present work. Interpreting the work of art is complex as social norms of 18th century aristocracy would have seen this commingling as taboo.
