George and Martha (who is shown seated behind being paid attendance by Lewis) had adopted Eleanor and her brother George Custis. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, in ornate gold gesso reticulated frame, OS: 40" x 34", SS: 27 1/2" x 21 1/2", loss to frame.
