An important and one-of-a-kind piece of WWII history. This Walther P-38 was taken from a Nazi officer during Operation Market Garden -- a tragic joint Allied military operation that inspired the book (and later, the movie) "A Bridge Too Far." One of the characters from the operation was MAJ Julian Aaron Cook, portrayed by Robert Redford in the 1977 movie. Cook famously led his men across the Waal River, reciting Hail Marys because they were visible to the German guns. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and promoted to Colonel. The consignor, involved with veterans affairs since the early 1970s, facilitated Cook's (and his family's) attendance at the movie's premiere. As a token of thanks, Cook gave him the Walther. A framed note from Cook to the consignor concludes: "As a memento of that event, please accept this P-38 pistol which I took from a German officer during the course of that operation." Also included is a copy of A Bridge Too Far, signed by Cook, inscribed to the consignor. And, finally, a photograph of Cook holding the pistol -- as the consignor holds the holster -- as he presents the pistol to the consignor. JOSEF RUDOLF WITZEL (1867-1924) DEUTSCHE-KUNST UND DEKORATION. 1898.
25 1/2x34 1/2 inches, 65x88 cm. Meisenbach, Riffarth & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; restoration along vertical fold. Trimmed.
Kunst und Decoration was a German illustrated monthly magazine dedicated to the arts, first published in 1898. Witzel was a Munich-based caricaturist, illustrator, painter and occasional poster artist. This allegorical image is very Germanic in its inspiration, foregoing the beautiful muse that would have figured in a French poster. Instead a naked young man's hand is guided by a rather demurely clad muse. She is helping him delineate curvy, Jugendstil lines, which stand out against the dark background. It is a powerful and effective image, and one of the few German posters selected for publication in les Maitres de l'Affiche. DFP-III 3453, Rademacher p. 38, Gallo p. 142-43, Wember 793.

ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) LOTERIE / NARODNI JEDNOTY PRO JIHOZÁPADNI MORAVU V BRNÉ. 1912. 73 1/8x38 3/4 inches, 185 3/4x98 1/2 cm. V. Neubert, Smichov, Prague. Condition B+: restored loss in upper right corner; repaired tears and staining in margins; minor overpainting in lower right corner; creases in margins and image. Three-sheets. Framed. Unexamined out of frame. "This poster offers, at 1 koruna apiece, lottery tickets to benefit the National Union for Southwestern Moravia at Brno, with the main prize of 25,000 korun . . . the organization was a regional branch of a nationwide effort to establish schools that would teach Czech and Moravian children in their own language. Such schools had to be supported by private funds, since all the schools provided by the state, then still part of the Austrian Empire, used German only" (Lendl p. 278). Here, Mucha "used his favorite motif of a dead tree as a seat for the symbolic mother of the nation, Cechia, who bends her head in a gesture of despair and defeat. Her right hand rests on a primitive wooden statue of the three-faced pagan god Svantovit, the protector of the early Slavs. His sun sign, horn, sacred steed and miraculous sword are carved in a childish style on his chest. At the front of the composition, a school girl with books and pencils looks at the viewer with an accusing expression as if to say 'the ancient Slavic gods are of no help; it is the living who must come to my rescue" (Spirit of Art Nouveau p. 179). The text banners at the top and the bottom of the poster were printed on separate sheets of paper, so occasionally this image will appear without any text. This is one of two posters Mucha designed advertising this lottery "as a patriot for whom the preservation of the Czech language and culture was of enormous importance" (Spirit of Art Nouveau p. 178). rare. Although it continues to be catalogued under the rubric of Jacobus de Voragine (ca. 1228-1298), this German version of his collection of saints' lives (from which developed a large number of customized local versions), known in the early printed editions as Der heiligen Leben , is now thought to have been composed ca. 1500 to provide refectory reading for nuns in the Dominican monastery at Nürnberg. Unlike the Legenda aurea , the Heiligen Leben contains only legends, not additional texts relating to the feasts of the liturgical year. The legendary contains many lives of saints who enjoyed a particularly strong cult in southwest Germany; and includes long accounts of the lives of saints associated with the Dominican Order: Sts. Dominic, Peter Martyr, Thomas Aquinas, and Catherine of Alexandria. The Winter and Summer parts have separate manuscript traditions, and were published as separate works in the earliest editions. Over 200 manuscript are recorded, and 41 printed editions, of which 33 in High German and 8 in Low German, from 1471/72 (Günther Zainer, Augsburg) to 1521 (Martin Flach, Strassburg). Conrad Fyner was the first printer at both Esslingen, from ca. 1474, and Urach, where he moved before February 1481; this was the second book printed there. The fine woodcut decorative border of scrolling ivy, bedecked with flowers, birds, a snail and insects, appeared in other Fyner editions at Urach, but the woodcut illustrations were commissioned for this edition. Muther considered them far superior to those of previous editions, praising the fineness of the figures and naturalism of the landscape. The coloring of this copy, rather hastily applied, is mainly in a vivid palette including bright red, green and blue, with a few cuts colored in more subdued shades of green, blue, orange and pale pink. Like all the early editions this one is of great rarity. ISTC lists 13 copies, most of one part only, the majority imperfect or fragmentary. The only American copies are the Bridwell Library copy of the Sommerteil (lacking 2 leaves), and a fragment of the Winterteil at Johns Hopkins. A single copy is recorded in ABPC since 1975 (Christie's New York, 24 May 2002, lot 124, lacking 18 leaves), a tall copy, preserving most of the original manuscript quire signatures and numerous deckle edges and unusually complete, containing all the woodcuts and lacking only the final text leaf. Laid into the above.Joseph Y. Jeanes was among the best turn of the 20th-century Philadelphia collectors. Assembling an impressive library, which included original Audubon drawings (now located at Harvard), Jeanes was a notable member of the Library Company among other Philadelphia-area institutions. It appears that he collected these images over a long period, with internal evidence suggesting some to have come from historian Joseph Jackson and antiquary Ferdinand J. Dreer. Among the photographers represented are John Moran, the brother of the noted western artist. Moran, whose images display remarkable quality and composition, is considered among the most artistic photographers of the post-Civil War period. In 1875, he wrote of photography: “Art in all its forms is the form of thought, and the photographic work which rises to this plane is the expression of the ideas of the photographer. Nature in some sort becomes plastic to his touch, and he moulds her to his judgement; this, however, he does by selection rather than construction; this happy selection comes from the power to see the beautiful, and results from a highly trained taste” (“Thoughts on Art, Nature and Photography” in The Philadelphia Photographer, June 1875).While institutional holdings of these or similar images are substantial, most notably by the Library Company and the Free Library of Philadelphia, those collections were largely assembled at the same time that this album was compiled by Jeanes. Similar albums, or even individual images from this period, seldom come to market.

O' GALOP (MARIUS ROSSILLON 1867-1946) NUNC EST BIBENDUM / LE PNEU MICHELIN BOIT L'OBSTACLE. Circa 1898.
61x44 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; restored loss in bottom margin; repaired tears in margins.
In 1894, at the international exhibition in Lyon, Michelin's staff had arranged a display of a large pile of tires. Rumor has it that when brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin saw the arrangement, one of them uttered, "If it had arms it would look like a man." Shortly after this observation, O'Galop came to the brothers with an idea for a poster, based on a picture he had found of a portly German holding aloft a stein of beer and giving the following toast "nunc est bibendum" ("now is the time to drink," a line from an ode by Horace). In 1898, with this poster, combining the man-like pile of tires, and the "time to drink" image, O'Galop gave birth to Bibendum (the Michelin Man), one of the most famous advertising characters in history. Depicted at a banquet table, Bibendum is standing with a raised glass filled with everything that could puncture a tire. On either side of him are two old deflated tires, the one on the left is supposed to be John Dunlop, the one on the right the director of Continental Tires. The proud, inflated and healthy-looking Bibendum is not worried about the sharp objects in his glass, because, as the text reads "the Michelin tire drinks obstacles." This rare and historic poster was the first of hundreds of images using Bibendum all over the world, and as a tribute to the beloved icon's effectiveness, he is still appearing in ads over 100 years later! A Continental Neoclassical Carved Mahogany Sofa, c. 1835, the arched crest rail with quatrefoil piercings, wide scroll arms terminating in rosettes, paired crouching lion feet, blocked base, height 38 1/2 in., width 79 in., depth 23 in. $4500/5500 Note: A German mahogany sofa of similar form to lot 155 is illustrated in Payne, 19th c. Interestingly, the restrained Gothic decoration on lot 155 compliments the Classicism of the form more than the Rococo flourishes commonly seen on similar examples.
