Eugène Verboeckhoven (Belgian 1798/99-1881) "Grazing in the Shade" oil on canvas signed lower left 20 in. x 24 in. in a period giltwood frame. Note: Verboeckhoven was inspired by the Dutch landscape masters whom he revered for their intense and unflinching attention to detail. He was born into an impoverished artistic family and as a young man supplemented his family's income by working as a lithographer a task that sharpened his eye for detail. He initially studied under his father before entering the Academy of Ghent. It was his initial training in anatomy while studying sculpture that helped him develop into such an accomplished and extraordinary painter of animals. Verboeckhoven was known for his preciseness of line extreme attention to detail rich palette and deft handling of light and shadow. His fame went well beyond his native Belgium. He traveled extensively exhibited widely and was a member of the Academies of Belgium Antwerp and St. Petersburg. Verboeckhoven was awarded the prestigious Order of Leopold in Belgium and the Légion d'Honneur in France. References: Berko. Eugene Verboeckhoven. Editions Laconti. Brussels. 1981. Flippo.
