GUSTAF FJAESTAD "VARMLAND" OILGUSTAF FJAESTAD "VARMLAND" OIL ON CANVAS, 1896 Gustaf Fjaestad (Swedish, 1868 - 1948) "Varmland" oil on canvas, 1896, the Swedish impressionist landscape depicting yellow birches in Varmland contrasting with a blue lake and sky, signed, dated, and titled lower right: "G. Fjaestad 96 / Varmland" Image: 40.25" H x 39.25" W. Frame: 48" H x 47" W. Note: Gustaf Fjaestad was an important Swedish Impressionist painter known for his evocative landscapes of the areas around Varmland (near Karlstadt). He was known for his unusual technique of coating canvases in light-sensitive chemicals, and projecting and developing images onto them which formed the basis for his initial subject drawing. Born in Stockholm, he studied with Carl Larsson, and was his assistant in finishing the frescoes at the Svenska National Museum. Interested in the Folk Art of Sweden, he founded the Rackstad Colony in Varmland with his wife, Kerstin Maja Fjaestad. Today, his work is in the collections of the National Museum of Sweden in Stockholm, and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, among others. Provenance: Property from the collection of world renowned American cellist Christine Walevska.
