HEMI...Osvaldo Salas (Cuban, 1914-1992), two framed gelatin silver prints depicting Fidel Castro, including one (1) with Ernest Hemingway ("Con Hemingway", c. 1960) and one (1) walking through Central Park in New York (c. 1955). Each signed in ink with title and date of negative, with embossed blind stamp 'Salas/Habana Cuba'. Inscribed to verso 'Negative by Osvaldo Salas printed by Robert Salas Limited Edition Cuba'. Each printed circa 1990, matted and framed under plexiglass in identical black spiral twist frames, and measuring the same. Image: 12 1/2" H × 16 1/2" W (32 x 42 cm). Framed: 26" H x 22" W. Ref. - JUAN MOREIRA PAINTING - "VENUS AFRICANA"
JUAN MOREIRA PAINTING - "VENUS AFRICANA" (1993)Juan Moreira (Cuban, 1938-2022). "Venus Africana" acrylic on canvas, 1993. Signed and dated at lower right. A striking painting titled "Venus Africana" by Juan Moreira, a Cuban modern artist who dedicated his work to the culture, beliefs, and traditions of his people. Moreira's "African Venus" is a totemic, idol-like figure comprised of abstract human and mythical zoomorphic features, painted in a Cubist manner that demonstrates Moreira's admiration for both Pablo Picasso and Wifredo Lam. Moreira was among the most important Cuban artists of the modern era, and his imagery captures symbolic creators of life and deities that were very much integrated with the natural world such as "Venus Africana". Size (painting): 21.5" L x 18" W (54.6 cm x 45.7 cm) Size (frame): 27.375" L x 24.25" W (69.5 cm x 61.6 cm)
About the artist: "Juan Moreira graduated as a professional draftsman in 1958 from the Fernando Aguado y Rico Higher School of Trades and Crafts in Havana. In 1960 he attended a course in Commercial Art at the Martin Studio School in Havana and in 1963 he graduated from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts and the Experimental Graphic Art Workshop. He is a member of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) and of the UNESCO International Association of Art (IAA). His works are part of the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba; the Museum of the Americas in Managua, Nicaragua; the Latin American Gallery in Krakow, Poland; the Cuban Art Museum in Vienna, Austria, The National Gallery of Jamaica, in Kingston; the Schools Museum in Gotha, Germany; the Saint Thomas University in Houston, Texas; and the Royal Ontario Museum in Ontario, Canada. He received First Prize in drawing at the First Provincial Exhibition of Visual Art Professors and Instructors in Havana (1973); an Honorary Mention in the 7th Kosice Biennial in Czechoslovakia (1984) and Third Prize at the 3rd Painting Contest of the Nicomedes García Gómez Foundation in Segovia, Spain (2001). He received the Diploma for Artistic Merit, granted by the Superior Institute of Art." (Cuban Art Resources Archive, 2022)
A few more interesting notes about Juan Moreira. He was the first Cuban artist to illustrate "Don Quijote de la Mancha" in a Cuban edition. He also assisted the Chilean artist Jose Venturelli on the murals at the Hotel Habana Libre as well as the buildings where Prensa Latina was founded. In addition, his artworks are in the private collections of King Emeritus Juan Carlos of Spain, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and in the United Nations building in Geneva.

ARTHUR LUIZ PIZA, BRAZIL (1928-2017), UNTITLED, AQUATINT ETCHING, 8 1/2"H X 7"W (IMAGE), 20 1/4"H X 17 1/2"W (FRAME)Arthur Luiz Piza, Brazil, (1928-2017) Untitled, aquatint etching Pencil signed and numbered 57/100. Biography from Swann Galleries, Inc.: Arthur Luiz Piza, a Brazilian mixed media artist trained in Paris, leads an ever-growing section of Latin American art in our biannual auctions of Contemporary Art. An especially unusual piece by the visionary is a highlight in our November 16 sale. The following notes from the catalogue shed light on his life and process. Piza relocated to Paris in 1951, where he lived and worked for most of his career. During his initial years in Paris, he trained under the master printmaker Johnny Friedlaender, adapting his style to the capabilities and demands of intaglio processes. Following this instruction, Piza began to use thicker plates than was typical for etchings, in order to make deeper, gouged incisions. This resulted in a three-dimensional textural quality in his printed works, as seen in Soleil rouge. He was awarded the National Engraving Prize early in his career, in 1959, for his innovations. In addition to his printed oeuvre, Piza experimented widely with varied media, pushing the boundary between works on paper, painting and sculpture. His collage works from the 1960s, like Sans titre, incorporated anything from traditional material such as colored paper to more radical substances like sand. He worked on all forms of supports, including canvas, wood and cardboard. Piza expanded the technique to a sculpture, moving beyond two-dimensional work to incorporate issues of space and perception in his work. He threaded a consistent visual vocabulary through his prints, collages and sculpture that derived from his interest in netting and spatial relationships. Piza initially exhibited his work in the inaugural São Paulo Bienal in 1951, preceding his move to Paris. Over the years, he exhibited his work at such esteemed venues as the Venice Bienale, Bienal de la Habana and Documenta. Piza's work is in the collections of many institutions including The Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He passed away in 2017 after a lifetime of rich artistic production. aquatint etching Dimensions: 8 1/2"H x 7"W (image), 20 1/4"H x 17 1/2"W (frame)
